You also need to make sure that shift rod is fully screwed into the lower unit .---Then backed it out just enuff to have the bend face forward.----No height measurement involved in a 9.9 model.

Take both screws out. Pull off the connector and see if the threads are stripped (insert the screws to make sure). You may have to replace the connector, but likely just need to check it.

Drop the l.u. and position the lower rod per above posts.

When ready to reattach, make sure the screws in the connector go through the machined slots in the rod ends, per above posts.

When I drop lu. What gear should I keep it in? And also after I take screws completely out that will help with lu to come out? Because when I loosen them it didn't want to let go. The brass fitting. And last thing when I put the lu back on what gear should I put it in the adjustment for brass fitting. And I really appreciate your help lot. I am very new at this and I am learning on the fly here.lol

Well you will find out that gear position ---DOES NOT ---matter.-----You just need to move it to get the maximum space to work.------When it goes back together the same applies.-------Just make sure the notches in rods line up with holes before putting those screws in.

I will say once more.-----It does not matter what gear it is in when you start taking it off.-----You have to wiggle the lever and pull shift rod up out of the lower unit .-----This needs to be done to get room to work on the connector !!!----When you do not follow this procedure you end up with damaged parts as you now see.----Usually the soft stainless threads are damaged on the bolts.-----Bought a box of 50 of those screws last time as is cheaper than 3 of them at a dealer.

Thank u for your help. I am sorry if I made u mad or anything.my first time working on outboard motor so I very nervous about this. But after doing it. Not bad at all. I went by what u said and made it alot easier. I will order new brass rod connector and go find bolts that will work because for 1 it is 8.00. one last thing I noticed after I took lu off I looked up where drive shaft goes and I noticed a rubber seal had moved down from pulling shaft out I just took rod and straighten it out. That would be correct?

If after 36 posts, you are still having such a terrible time trying to correct such a simple problem, I strongly suggest you sell your tool box and let a outboard mechanic, even the worse outboard mechanic in your area take care of it. You either have no outboard and are simply wasting our time, pulling our leg to pass your time, or you're totally incapable of understanding the basic fundamentals of mechanics. It took 36 posts for you to notice that the brass shift connector and screws were stripped??? And racerone is getting laryngitis yelling that it doesn't matter what gear it's in... just pull the damn shift rod up where you can see what your doing. And now you noticed a rubber seal huh? Oh God... probably a lower crankshaft seal fell out of the powerhead!

I did say sorry about asking. This is my first time ever working on an outboard and didn't want to mess it up. I just read on these forms and orhers that some people had a hell of a time getting the rod to line back up in the powerhead. So that was why I was nervous. I didn't get a chance to work on this until this past weekend. How I found the stripped bolts and brass fitting. And the rubber seal how am I suppose to know about it. I guess next time I will buy a book on this. Instead of asking. Didn't know I would be called a name for asking questions. Sorry for wasteing people's time.
