If you just want to find parts that fail when hot, use a hair dryer.

Don't understand what you mean by "detecting overheating". You can buy wax-like sticks that change color at specific temps.

Think I saw one in harbor freight sale paper at $10 hard to beat.I like the old faithful hand placed carefully on the head.Should be too hot to hold your hand on but not hot enough to burn you.

Try radio shack. $I9 or 29 I can't remember. Had mine 6 years with no problems.
Really good to check wheel bearing temps on your trailer on a long trip. I checked it against some high $ guns and it's within 1-2 degrees

Rob, i bought one of the $10 harbour freight ones "cen-tech" it's small enough to fit in your pocket, and accurate, enough to aim at the head, and read the temperature. worked fine to tell if you are overheating.

I have both HF's heat gun and infrared laser thermal sensor. Both work fine for me and I have verified the accuracy of the sensor.

My Dad has a Harbor Freight unit and it acts strangely. If you are within an inch or so away it seems about right but when you get farther away the temp changes a lot. For example, if an ice cube reads 32 deg from an inch away it will read 60 deg from 6 inches away.

Oh yeah??..Seemed a little to cheap to work worth a hoot...guess I'll get one anyway...I need to go pick up a couple more float chargers too. I still like the "gun", as I like the laser..great for head/spark plug/exhaust temps on my bikes..

My sensor was about $40 and has the laser function (if desired) for spot readings as compared to general area readings.

The laser does not give you a spot reading, at least not on any of them I've used and I use them all the time for work. All the laser does is give the approximate center of the area you're reading. The area being read is a cone that gets larger pretty fast, same as the transducer on a depth finder, so the closer you get, the more accurate the reading.

Thats true, but most of the applications here are done for comparison/fluctuation. At a foot away aimed it my Harley cylinders, shows a big diff of only a few inches with the laser.
ANYWAY, that said....I went to HF yesterday...bought one of the little puppies for $10. Accurate, and very portable...think it (or another for a spare), will find a home in the big boat for manifold checking..I like cool toys
