Sorry if you find it rude but it's true. They covers too much model/year and have a lot of errors. Even for some basic maintenance, they can make you scratch your head like if, for example, they mention a thermostat when there isn't one on the engine! An OEM service manual is a hundred times better.

Hard to find the extra cash with the economy the way it is and after you've already spent money on the Seloc manual from right here at iboats.com!!!

Just doesn't make sense that these motor wouldn't have a thermostat........so I guess the 10-15 seconds it takes for the tattle-tale to pee is just how long it takes for the impeller to pump water up through there?

it also tells me that Mercury never intended this motor to be used during the winter time!

Yep! T-stat or not, the water will exit through the telltale, The only difference being that, on engine with a t-stat, water exit right away after startup and the temp rise until it reach the optimum temp then, the t-stat open and water flow around the block to maintain that temp. On engine without t-stat, water always flow around the block, so they take a bit longer to warm-up (and it's normal for water to exit after a 10-15 sec, cause it have to fill all the passages).

I've heard these engines don't like to idle, but do they run better when warmed up too?

Re: Where is Thermostat

why does step 32 in the Seloc Manual under L6 Assembling talk about "install the poppet valve, thermostat, and cover."?

Sounds like the wrong manual as the L4 115 does have a poppet and T-stat..

so I guess the 10-15 seconds it takes for the tattle-tale to pee is just how long it takes for the impeller to pump water up through there?
Yep.. takes that long to fill block up, cooling is a straight thru design but internal passage ways, plates and gaskets slow the flow down some to promote cooling.

I find it hard to believe these motors came with no way of knowing if your running hot. Am I missing something.

Nope.. That the way from the factory and reason for tattle tale, also no horn in box.

it also tells me that Mercury never intended this motor to be used during the winter time!

Hunters and fisherman have been using them for years in winter with no problems

I've heard these engines don't like to idle
The older distributor engines are more picky in their set up and idle suffers somewhat due to flexing drive belt,stiff/overgreased bearings in distributer, idle tube splits/cracks from age and vibration, wear on reed block labryth seals

Apparently yes, you're missing something. A thermostat isn't something that will tell you if the engine is running hot or not. For that, you'll need a temperature gauge or, at least, an overheat sensor linked to a warning module. The only function of a t-stat is to somewhat ?delay? the cooling process, thus allowing the engine to reach more rapidly the optimum running temp.

No I thought I posted it ,but apparently I didn't. I meant to post in the last was that these motors didn't even have a buzzer/horn or option of a temp gauge.
This what I am missing. Maybe this motor has somewhere on it that a buzzer, horn, or temp gauge can be hooked. I know what the operation of a thermostat is.:D

Seloc and clymer manuals are junk. Enough said. if you like your motor, buy ONLY OEM MERC MANUALS. Yah it might cost 100 bucks, but what is you motor worth?

Re: Where is Thermostat

If you look on the water jacket cover around the spark plugs you might see a 1/4 " plug. This goes into the water jacket and you can install a pressure or temp sensor for the reading you are mentioning. I have thought about doing that many times but have yet to do it. Up by #1 spark plug is a threaded hole where you could attach a dry temp sensor also.

Re: Where is Thermostat

As to the manuals, my boat came with the Clymer Manual and I bought the Mercury manual. The Mercury manual is more detailed to my engine. I haven't opened the Clymer since I got the Merc manual.

Thinking about Ebaying my Clymer and Seloc manuals.

Yeah, I have to agree with you on this one. I bought my Clymer manual from here. But I also bought a Merc manual once I really got into doing any serious work. I get tired of the confusion of "On motors 1974-78 WITH blah, blah, blah, refer to steps 5-17, On motors 1974-78 WITHOUT, then proceed to steps yada yada yada...." It's a pain. With the manual from Merc for your motor, you just turn to the section you want to know about and GO!

Got mine off Ebay for 29 bucks, not saying you can too, but still....Also agree with OP that said "what is your motor worth?"

Best of luck!
