Sure it's aluminum tubing and a few fasteners, but the prefabbed ones all the hard work is done, you just need to install it. If you have the ability to build your own, that's the way to go, but most people (like myself) don't, so I'll probably buy a Monster or something like it.
Pylons are the same. For $60 in materials and some elbow grease you can make one. You can also buy a nice one with great padding, high quality fasteners, logos etc for $300 - 500.
It's all a trade off. Cash or time.
