Re: Where to look for outboard model #?
You said 1978 was when they started using those head numbers, what year did they stop? I've pretty much given up on finding the serial and model tag on the engine itself. I have two other evinrudes that have been sitting, and they both have their silver data tags bolted down. I have been buying parts so far for this motor as I think it is around a 1979 model.
Maybe I should post this elsewhere or start a another thread?
That brings me to more questions. If memory serves correctly (I'm at work on lunch) I have a 73 evinrude 135 horse, and a 77 evinrude 135 horse, and my current evinrude which is a 85 horse. The top of all three of the powerheads is for the most part identical. Including the coils, power module, and the layout of the wiring. Is this stuff interchangeable?
I am dealing with a no-start/intermittent light off of the 85 horse. Carbs look good, and match, I removed the top one (322033) took it apart and it was clean inside, and made sure the float was parallel with the carb when upside down. Spark looks good and constant for all four coils.
Here is where I am at:
I suspect either a sheared key, as I would still see spark, but it wouldn't be timed in the right sequence. I have to spray 50:1in a spray bottle into all 4 holes and maybe it will chug for a second, or backfire, but wont stay running on its own.
What I don't know is how to set the basic timing without the engine running. Or even if I need too?
Also is there such a thing as a fuel pump or is it just vacuum suction? Where would I look for a vac port? I am using a little plastic outboard fuel can with the squeeze pump on it (yes it is flowing the correct way). The plugs are sometimes wet if I spray too much, and the electric choke works.
Thanks, for the help.
