Re: Where's Don S?

BRG,
I agree with you completely. Although I haven't been in this forum long, I really enjoy reading Don's experienced opinions.

Although some may feel he's abrasive, I think he takes the right attitude in wanting to "help those who help themselves". I can understand his frustration with people asking questions looking for a "magic bullet" when the answer is clearly printed in the UNREAD service manual.

Wake

Re: Where's Don S?

Don S has the experience.....we all know that. I myself have had the good and bad side of Don, you take it with a grain salt. In the end he will get you going. Just need a little thick skin to deal with it.

After reading the post in your link BRG25.....seems he may have some other issues he is dealing with and it just came to a head with trog100. Not a shrink so it's just a guess.

Hopefully he just needed to cool off and will be back soon in true form......

God knows I need the help :D ;)

Re: Where's Don S?

I can understand missing DonS. I have no doubt that he knows his sheet, however, it is very discouraging to be talked down to when asking for help. I have done many things in the last few months that I have never done. ( first boat ), and although I have a manual, sometimes having things explained by others is what is required to clear things up. I never came here looking for a magic button to push. I came here for advice of others. I do respect DonS knoledge of marine engines and hope he hasn't left for good, but I also respect the others who offer advice. Sometimes we may not thoroughly understand our manuals, and that is what I believe this forum to be about. I asked about rebuilding a carb, and was told if I needed detailed direction I shouldn't be messing with it. ( DonS ) I spoke with someone outside this forum who took the time to explain what to look for and how to rebuild my carb, and it was very easy. If I had taken my boat to a mechanic everytime someone told me that I wasn't qualified to work on it, I would have spent over 2000 dollars on it. I didn't take it to a mechanic, and the boat seems to run fine. I owe it all to iboats. DonS is a very important part of iboats. I hope we have not heard the last of him.

Don subscribes to the "do it right or not at all" policy and I agree 100%.

Know one knows the real mechanical abilites of anyone on the internet and there is a huge risk giving advice in a forum.

His advice and experience is freely given (again FREE) and I believe some thanks are due.

Re: Where's Don S?

I was considering starting a "get Don back" thread, so maybe this can be it. He got on me once (I deserved it) so I have seen the dark side (minor), but I can tell you he is not alone with others of his technical caliber. Goes with the territory and I definitely want him back. Insults and conflict are part of every board I have been on. So what, it's not like anybody can reach through the monitor and slap you. In fact that is why it happens, very little risk.

Don, your flock needs you!!!

Just remember there is more then one expert on this board.
Life will not end around here without Don, but it will not be the same also.

Re: Where's Don S?

i too would like Don s to come back.. he was a valuable asset to this forum..

and yes i dont mind admitting that overall faults included he is probably of more use to this forum than i am..

i also expect to take the blame for driving him off..

if u guys wanna tell me to **** off in the hope he will come back.. do so by all means.. i will abide by the overall oppinion..

bondo pretty much knows the score.. i think "Trog" is dons problem.. at least as far as this board is concerned it is..

this aint really a situation i wanted to happen.. but it is situation that has happened.. i also think its a fight don picked.. still i am bound to be a little biased on this one.. so my oppinon dont matter that much..

trog100

Re: Where's Don S?

I repair computers for a living and have seen my fair share of people who have absolutely no business thumbing around inside of their systems. However, belittling them in a public forum is inexcusable. Being in the service industry, one thing we must remember that if it wasn't for people breaking things, or things breaking on their own, we would all have no jobs.

If someone buys a product, be it a boat, computer, refrigerator, etc.. and that person wants to beat it to death with a sledgehammer, take belts off, or whatever they choose, well, then that is their right! I admire people who want to learn about their new product, service manual or no service manual. Guess what happens when they completely screw it up? They bring it us, the service professional, and we can make a living and feed our families. It's a cyclical process, and in the long run, the "idiot" always learns their lesson, and the service professional always gets more business. If the customer knows he/she is being blatantly flamed behind their back, however, do you think they will bring their business back? Most likely not. Same goes for this forum. I'm sure many newbies have been scared off for fear of being chastised. Do we really want that?

Re: Where's Don S?

Can't we all just get along.
Difference of opinions happen.
Looks like it just went a little too far.
No one should have to leave the site for any reason other then what the Mods dictate.

Trog100 your not the only one who has pushed peoples buttons.
So take some blame but not all of it. You have a right to your opinion. If people don't agree.......they don't have to answer unless they want to.

Just don't make it personal and it will be all good.

Just my opinion. ;)

P.S. Don come back.

Re: Where's Don S?

Trog I personally don't want to lose either of you on iboats. Hopefully Don will cool down and be back. Debates in someones question isn't what we need, but they happen sometimes. All of us should try to cut down on that, we all have opinions, sometimes they are better than others, sometimes they aren't.
I personally like and can handle it when Don is short and to the point with his posts. I greatly appreciate it when he helps. Hope to see him back! :)
