I have a '77 johnson 35 and i just bought a new control box for it...I spliced the new wires with the old existing wires and got it to fire up. Now...the throttle and shift cables they look like they are the right connections, but when i look online it's showing that a pre-79 engine takes a different set of cables. Here is the pics of my throttle and shift locations...and the cable that is currently connected to control box.:confused::confused:

The issue with the control cables has to do with the control box, not the motor. The older boxes/cable sets used friction screws on the cable ends, not the "swedge fit" cable ends that you have. What you can't do is to use the set screw type cables with a control box that uses the swedge fit type. Similarly, you can't use the swedge fit cables with an older control box that was built for the set screw cables.

Also, the original Johnson Shipmaster and Evinrude Simplex control boxes were smaller than the later version bearing these same names, and had rounded shoulders. They used the set screw type cables. The later models of the Shipmaster and Simplex control boxes originally used the set screw type, and then were redesigned for the swedge fit type. It is with these boxes that you have to know which you own.

Go ahead and hook your control box and cables up. Adjust the "spin wheel" on the motor end of them for proper range of travel on both the shift and throttle. After doing so, you should be "good to go!"

so even though it looks like the end is correct for the throttle side...it's the wrong cable? My box is 100% post-'79 style i checked the connections inside the box and they are the "swedge fit"... so tashadaddy...i just need that kit to make it work? and jay i did hook up the cable to the throttle side, and it wouldn't stay on the little "nipple" like it supposed to..that's what lead me to believe the cables are wrong in the first place :confused:Thanks for your help guys!

the correct throttle cable end has a clip on it that holds the cable to the pin.

the shift cable has a pin that inserts and turns to lock into the shift lever.

The part that you are missing on the throttle cable is a metal clip that holds it on the motor's throttle arm. This is why it kept coming off. As TD said, there should also be a pin on the gearshift side, which connects it to the shift lever.

I have some things to do now, but give me a few hours and I will take a photo of a properly installed throttle and shift cable, so that you can see what yours should look like.

allright, thanks tashasdaddy... I am going to order that kit...am i right in assuming I order the new set of cables post '79, and the kit is going to retro fit them to my '77 engine correct? that's what I need...just want to be sure before I order them. Sorry for all the dumb questions. Thanks

Re: Which control cables? '77 35hp johnson

let me get this straight. you have a post 79 controller, wanting to use it on a pre 79 motor. if so as you said the cables are different. i am not sure you can remove the motor end of the post 79 cables, to change to the pre 79 motor ends. there is a set screw in the pre 79 adapters.

yes, you got that right...My controller has the cables with the loop hole at the end. My engine is a 1977 and according to all diagrams, takes a different kind of cable that is just straight. I am wanting to know what I need to make the control box work with my engine. I think that kit is backwards, making the old box work with new engine?

Re: Which control cables? '77 35hp johnson

i just went out and check a set of post 79 cables, the ends do not come of for change. i think your solution is to find a pre 79 controller and use pre 79 cables, you could move your current ignition out of your present controller to the dash, or side panel.

i did some searching for you, any of these will work with the motor. you will have to mount ignition and choke on dash, or side panel.

well...I am thinking im gonna run up the boat shop and find out for sure if I can use these cables or not before I run out and buy a whole nother control box. By the time I get done buying all the wrong parts and wrong boxes I could have purchashed a brand new box:rolleyes:

is your motor already set-up for cables?....or are you removing the tiller and hooking up cables?
