Re: Which to do first?

Thanks. Tomorrow I finish the cradle and take the cap off. I'm hoping to have this finished by july 1st. 2 months might not be a likely timeline but it's my goal.

Re: Which to do first?

So I got the cap off after running back and forth using 4 hand wenches. I've got all my measurements and ready to start cutting. Finally!

The cap weighed as much as the motor. Only more awkward to handle. Who knew?

My 2 helpers not really helping. Apparently any manual labor interferes with her tan.

Time to get cutting.

Notice the tennis racket? Its not really a tennis racket, it's a bug zapper. There was a small wasps nest in my boat and every time I ran the vacuum they would go nuts.

They were asked nicely to leave. Since they didnt comply and It was getting close to dark, I didnt have time to go to home depot to get spray.

I played racket ball with 4-5 of them and the rest scattered off. Probably not the smartest decision of the day but I was victorious without any injuries.

Good luck tearing into her this weekend. Suit up, respirator on, grinding grinding.

Look for the shop-vac box for attaching a shop-vac to your grinder for dust control, I can't find it in my Iboats bookmarks... Sorry...

Re: Which to do first?

Thanks! I started cutting and had to stop because of the rain. I'm debating getting battery powered tools and a poncho so I can work in the rain.

Just as I thought, the boat is rotten. All rotten. The manufacturer never used epoxy on the wood for the sides and the deck. Wonder how It kept for so long without becoming goo.

It seems as if the reciprocating saw works better than the circular saw. I even got a plywood blade for it. Not quite sure why it keeps binding up. Might be the wet wood.

Everywhere is wet. The foam is soaked and the wood is black. One side high up seems like it's in good shape.

So after I cut op all the big pieces, whats the best way to get to the edges? I do have an angle grinder. Do I use a cutting blade on it or a grinding wheel?

Also, Whats the best way to get the foam out? Its wet and heavy. I was thinking a trenching shovel.

any thoughts?

With no epoxy through the wood I was surprised that any of it on this boat was still white.

Whats the easiest way you've found to get the foam out? It's wet, heavy and smells like pork-rinds and sweat.

good work your 1/4 of the way there lol i used the claw end of a hammer to pull the foam out then when i got close to the hull i used a putty knife to get the rest up

claw hammer seems to work well with a face shield as it gets splattery when doing the foam and around the edge i found a chisel works well especially if its wet wood underneath. then again its 90 degrees + where i am so im doing most of the tear out with a chisel so i dont have to put on the tylek suit until i have to start grinding (also easier for a newby so you dont grind a hole in the hull). once the wood is out its easy to see whats glass and whats hull

Re: Which to do first?

the foam was so waterlogged i took a shovel to it and it comes out in chunks. I guess there is always a silver lining to everything. Im at the hull and the gas tank looks like its in good condition. tomorrow I grind, grind grind. I dont think I will be able to remove the stringers all in one piece. Hope thats not an issue.

What grinding wheel is best to get to the hull? All I can find is 40 grit for metal or 60 grit for metal for my 4 1/2' angle grinder. Is there a better method?

Re: Which to do first?

Those gets you really close to the hull, but use 1 of these in a 24 or 36Grit to take it all the way to the hull, and the rough & scuff in prep for glassing...

Others use this, but I used the flap wheel....

Re: Which to do first?

So I finally got time to order my materials from US Composites. I'm going to start grinding out the stringers tomorrow. It looks like the factory had a large weave. It looks almost like 18oz woven roving. when I grind out the stringers do I also grind down the old fiberglass on the hull?

Do I glass in the whole hull or just the stringers to the old fiberglass in the hull?

Re: Which to do first?

Just grind the hull enough to get to fresh glass. You'll see the color change. You only need to grind it about 6" back from where the stringers will sit. This will allow you to do your tabbing.

good! I decided to do everything with 1708 and it would get a bit expensive if i had to reglass the hull as well. I took off work tomorrow so I could everything ground out and ready for the new fiberglass that should arrive on monday.

Re: Which to do first?

You should always apply a layer of CSM prior to laying the 1708

Re: Which to do first?

why? does 1708 bind better to CSM than pre-resined wood?

Re: Which to do first?

Please let me know so I could add more CSM to the order. I just thought it would be easy breezy to make everything 1708. That way I would never worry about anything under my deck and only a fire would take my boat out.
