Who has carpet in their boat?

My family wants me to buy some marine grade carpet for the CC boat and install it. I don't neccessarily hate the idea, but wonder how long it would be before I regret it. We are doing the stringers and sub floor replacement. After that I would be happy to have the low maintenance fiberglass floor again but they seems to think we'd enjoy the carpet and that it would look better. I've never seen a center console bay with carpet but it could be cool I guess. Any opinions?

Why not both?

I like this setup...fiberglass deck, with fitted carpet that can be removed.

Best of both worlds!

I have carpet in our ski boat,it has a rubber backing. The floor is completly sealled with resign so moisture hasn't been an issue in 20 yrs of service. If you fish alot cleanup will be the biggest problem. How about a snap or velcro in carpet for nonfishing days. Mostly DIY except for the border.

I have carpet in mine, like it because things don't slide but you do or should make sure it is dried out before covering the boat so you don't have a mold and mildew problem hope that helps. EJ

If I went with permannent carpet it would be trailered at least 45 minutes before getting home. I could always cover the boat the next day. Should be dry by then. Fishing would still be a problem but I do see it in bass boats alot.

Re: Who has carpet in their boat?

I have super thick 28oz pontoon carpet in my fishing boat, hate wearing shoes and the carpet is really nice to walk on.

The low pile carpet like bass boats have should be fine, it dries in a really short time and pretty easy to keep clean.

I hose mine down once or twice a year and then wet vac it, keeps it pretty clean.

Check this link....http://www.snapincarpet.com/.. as Rcoky_road said, best of both worlds. Send them a template, they send back the carpet. Not cheap, but first class. I don't have carpet in the house either, but if you've got a wet deck with kids moving around, I don't think there is a better non sip surface and cushions the impact if someone does fall. The only negative (other than high initial cost) is the button for the snaps on the deck of the boat can hurt like H3ll if you step on one while barefooted with the carpet out.

Are you using your CC for fishing? If so, it probobly won't be long before you have slime, blood ,bait etc ground in and smelling sweet!. Removable carpet (or vinyll) would be a better choice if you fish more than occasionally IMHO.

I went to Lowes and they have indoor outdoor carpet, it comes on 12 foot rolls.

I bought six feet at 1 something a foot, and glued it down with mastic.

It was good for 5 years then i pulled the motor and oil got all over the end bye the bilge i cut a straight line across pulled it up and went and bout another six feet glued it down and i swear you cant tell where the old one and new one is.

I made a common line bye laying down the transom side first and laid it out and cut thru both carpets for a common cut. Used a razor knife.

Depends on what floats your boat, fiberglass deck or carpet. You won't slip when it gets wet.

Re: Who has carpet in their boat?

We lived with carpet in our SeaRay 170 til the floor rotted out. It was always wet as the boat lived a relatively hard life sitting in the water six months a year. Even with a custom ventilated Sunbrella cover it got plenty wet under there what with condensation and the odd leaky place.

What sure didn't help was that the folks that cut the floor to install the fuel tank durnig assembly at the factory didn't bother to seal the edges of the hatch or the floor. SHLURRRRRP! The wood soaked up all the moisture from the wet carpet and turned to mush. Also they carpeted the lockers under the seats which was kinda dumb too. Especially as there was no ventilation in the area.

This time around with the Scout I was real interested in having no carpet at all and I must say I love just tossing a coupla buckets down the length of her and watching all the sand, potato chip crumbs, and other crud slosh out of the scuppers. The nonskid is a little hard on the tootsies after standing at the helm for extended periods but boat shoes or crocs take care of that.

I'd say it would be worth investiaging snap in carpet to get the best of both worlds. It was an option on the Scout but the previous owner didn't bother and so far, I haven't either.

I have carpet in the cabin and hate it.Pet hair, spills, and who knows what else. Thought of wood or vinyl, but it can't be slippery. I just keep a sweeper onboard to fix that problem. Here is what I have on the rear deck. Its a non-skid mat that is glued down to the deck. Spray hose and a brush and its clean.

I've got it in my SeaRay which is a mixed blessing. Can't imagine it in a CC.

Wife just had a good idea. After we replace the floor we'll either find those snaplock rubber squares that the preschoolers play on (and glue them down)or go with grey rhinoliner. We fish quite a bit more than we do anything else. Has to be washable.

put it in the thundercraft to replace the old stuff, got it at Menards, no slip surface is great. just a fishing boat so really don't care if it smells later, will replace again as needed, cheap stuff. about 30.00 for the whole boat. had the same stuff in the last boat for 10 years. still looked good

If your going to get the snap lock mats, you might want to look at horse stall mats. They snap together the same way, come in all different colors, and will hold up much longer. Just a thought.

I understand the desire for carpet, as it does feel better on bare feet. I also believe that it will keep you boat wetter, and thus will promote rot. You might look into something call Dri Dek , it is like the "interlocking squares" your wife mentioned but is actually made for marine use. I know some folks use it on their center consoles and absolutely love it.....just a thought....

Re: Who has carpet in their boat?

Carpet in a fishing boat is a bad idea in my opinion. Bass boats get away with it as there's rarely any blood n guts brought in the boat.. most of those guys use lures, the live wells are usually right at the gunnels (mine were anyway) and it's easy to just grab the fish by the mouth and straight from the water to the well.

Carpet holds moisture, odors and goo..... and it rots.

For a ski boat I can see it but there's too many other non-skid options for fiberglass decks. I'd just make sure everyone wears non-skid shoes and leave it alone.

Re: Who has carpet in their boat?

I have a fish n ski(bass boat) with carpet but would love to remove it but i have no idea because if you removed it from the fishing decks how would you apply paint to all the live well lids etc. Ive yet to see a good looking bass boat without carpet. Most bass boats have sparkley gel coats and i think the white deck paint would look weird unless you painted the boat. I'll do some searching around.

Well, It's either two 3' x 12' rolls of dri dek or leave it alone. I have to wait and see how well the floor goes back together.
