I would wait until they at least get Service Pack 1 out before I made any switch. I was super reluctant to move from XP to 7 but really like 7 now that I have used it.

That sounds about right. They released Windows 8 in Oct, now in less than a year they plan to have Blue......... I don't think I'll do anything until the dust settles........

Just seems to me that Blue is a gussied up way of saying service pack. Or, kinda like what Windows 98se did for Windows 98. Wouldn't seem logical for them to fire out a completely new OS in this short amount of time. But... I guess we shall see.

Re: Who has jumped to windows 8?

That is all my soon to be 92 year old mom wants a cell phone for is to make calls if she breaks down on the road, she still drives and that is scary enough, lol but, it is getting very difficult to find any just call/receive cells anymore, she is very old school and has trouble with new electronic gadgets, I don't know that I will be able to find another simple cell if hers quits working altho I do see them on occasion on ebay but they are getting pricey as well for old school phones. If it wasn't for the grandkids we probably wouldn't know how to use our 4G's either, this technology has come a long way and it is not a cheap one...but this is all another topic..

Have a good one

You might look into prepaid cell phones. While you can get prepaid smart phones, they do still have some simpler, just-a-phone options. I switched to AT&T GoPhone severalyears ago because all I do is make and receive calls and do that pretty rarely. (I'm a disagreeable old hermit.) It's 10 cents a minute and the phone I got cost $29.00. It's a Samsung flip phone which is, of course, long obsolete and no longer available, but they have others in that general price range. Here's a link to the AT&T prepaid page so you can see what's available.

Prepaid phone

Yeah, I thought about doing that, but hers only costs me about $10 a month for her on my account plus the phone, I may still have to if I ever need a replacement phone for her, so far can't get any cheaper then it is now..

Thanks for the info

Guys...Install Classic Shell from the website I listed. It will turn your Windows 8 PC into something VERY similar to Windows 7. Less of a culture shock at that point and your start menu IS back!! And it allows you to directly boot to the Classic Shell, completely bypassing Metro (or whatever they're calling the UI).

Don't struggle, install Classic Shell - it's free afterall, no bloatware/adware/malware/etc.

If available in your area with service areas that meet your Mom's needs you may want to take a look at virginmobileusa. Their site is juvenile geared but the pay as you go plan with never expiring minutes can be purchased for about $80 per year; combined with auto top up and you never have to worry about it. Voice mail and texts can be blocked except for service message from them and they are free.

AARP also offers some nice plans and the new tracphone sold at Walmart is a nice basic pay as you go plan and the phone has nice large buttons.

That's assuming that an MS tablet is going to sell very well which history shows won't happen.

The discussion here is not about tablets but about desktop and laptop OS and has more to do with the maturity of the OS anyway.

Re: Who has jumped to windows 8?

My only reason in starting this thread was the application of windows 8 on the desktop environment, I know what percentage of enterprise users there are, but I was talking about the installed base of personal users.

If I were still in the Military, I would love to have a high powered mobile tablet that I could use in the field with the touch apps, in the world of my home office desktop environment, I don't like the way they have gone. I am pretty tech savy and have used a couple of work around items to get it to operate the way I want.

I don't think the average consumer is going to be willing to have to "fix" their new computer so they can seamlessly upgrade their home office.

As I said, I am well aware of the enterprise community, but if you watch the blitz of TV ad's right now, it is all targeted to the consumer market, which the tablet is not the majority now. It may very well be that the tablet market becomes main stream for the home user, but I believe the win 8 system is far ahead of what the average consumer is doing right now.

I believe that the average consumer is going to move along kicking and screaming.

Re: Who has jumped to windows 8?

In my role as consultant / coder I've got enterise customers CLAMORING to buy Windowes 8 Pro tablets and role them out. A LOT of companies have wanted to use tablets but iPads and Android tablets just don't fit well in the Windows ecosystem but with the new tablets from MS all that is changing fast.

Once users get used to how Win 8 works on their tablet (or smart phone) using it on the desktop will become second nature and in a couple years everyone will wonder what all the fuss was about. (Keep in mind business/enterprise is 80% of Microsoft's sales.)
You should send an email to MS. I bet they will be happy to hear your news.

My IT buddy told me to stay away from it. Typical for a new microsoft product....security issues and bugs. I recently just bought a laptop and i made sure it had 7 on it.

We've just about gone all out at the house now.
1 Win 8 machine
1 2012 server (win 8 server)
1 Win 8 phone
1 Surface RT

Pretty happy with all of it so far. My wife has the phone and if she could get used to the changes than anyone can. I think she's going to steal the surface from me (work gift)

Re: Who has jumped to windows 8?

I have a feeling that A new laptop is in my future and unless I can find a Win 7 laptop, it's going to be a modded Win 8 computer with either Start8 or a registry edit ( Start menu is just turned off in Windows 8. )

As for my current laptop. It's a POS Acer I bought in 2008 and had nothing but problems with. Vista drivers for the DVD burner crashed 3 times and Acer plain would not send me the drivers to make it work ( they actually got Nasty on the phone ) because the hardware they used was more or less hacked to work on Vista. I fixed with Win Xp and found the drivers for the components from their respective manufactures and all was well.. Till the pins that hold the keyboard/ screen on started to break and now the DVD burner no longer registers at all, so it is ready for the trash. I may USB boot a version of Opensuse Server into it and mess with setting up a linux network but it may just go to the trash.

My last laptop had Vista on it and I absolutely hated it. The wireless utility on it was complete garbage. I could be 5 feet away from my router and still have a poor connection.
I have 7 now and I love it. I have IT friends and they said to stay clear of 8. Way too many bugs and microsoft can track a lot more of your online activity.
