Who likes going out on the water for the sake of being on the water?

I have to admit, that the more I boat, the more I enjoy the occasional trip solo. Being out on the water with a chart, full fuel tanks, and a few frozen bottles of water to keep me cool during the day is something I truly enjoy. I love getting up at 6:00am, I can be at the ramp by 6:30 (food, etc prepared the night before) and on the water by 7:00am.

If the winds are below 3mph, the water will be like a mirror and I can run WOT in my little 14 foot MFG Niagara at 28-30mph. If wind picks up to 6-8 mph, the waves can be small to challenging for my boat. Most of the time I just back down to 18-20 mph and everything is fine. If winds get above that I am heading for the local port. But that has never happened, because I follow the weather for the area before I leave.

I also tell people where I am going (I plan the trip the evening before) and leave my cell phone.

My only real flaw is not having a marine radio. That I will be getting for my birthday this September (send contributions to MRS Mark42).

I really enjoy the challenge of boating. There is a lot to learn about boating and navagation. I have just cracked the surface.

Just thougth I would share.... :)

I like just being out on the water. I take the family... Wife fishes... son swims over the side... I just enjoy the fact I am out on the water!

Also like to go. Nowhere in particular. Just waste gas.

Some girl once told me that the negative ions in water make you happy.. She was a tree hugger type but I honestly think there might be something to what she was saying.. I'm always happier out on the water...I have a lot of land based hobbies too but on a hot summer day, I'd rather be on a lake or river boating than doing anything else.. The day goes by SOOO fast on the water.. We usually get up when it's still dark out because it's a 2 hour drive to the big lake.. We are on the water by 8 am and not OFF the water until it's getting dark.. My wife and are always wondering where the day went!

Ditto with Mark42. I'vw been land-locked for 2 1/2 months (injury) and really missed being out. I'm back "on the water" now and to me it means Tranquillity, Freedom and Therapy. Monday- Friday, the week-end's I leave for the idiots, young guns and PWC's.

In the summer when the sun waits till 9 to set i'll get off work at 5 and head out to the lake for a quick cruse and a swim since the boat ramp is only 5min from the house. Its a nice way to relax after a long day.

My wife and I redid our first boat shortly after our grandson was murdered a couple of years ago. We just finished our 2nd boat and have been at the lake 4 of the last 5 weekends. For us the lake is therapy. It's our way to get away and unwind. Whether its cruising for miles or just sitting anchored in a cove, getting out on the boat has brought us closer and reminded us how beautiful nature truely is.

I carried a good friend fishing last year late in the summer. Right before we put the boat on the trailer, he stopped out of the blue and commented "You know, this is the most relaxed I've ever seen you".

Ditto there Mark.

BTW: I got a great deal on a really good marine VHF off of eBay. Saved well over 50% of what they want at the boating stores.

Nothing better than just anchored and enjoying the water, slight breeze, and the sounds of other boats cruising around the lake. Lot's of times, I'll just anchor and sit there doing nothing but relaxing.

Usually I fish but sometimes like to just boat slowly around the lake for grins. My wife often brings a book to just read/relax. Life is indeed good.

ya, i'm just like everyone else here. can't wait to get out on the water. usally a weekend floater, boater. this weekend was great, got out fri, sat. sun. better than floater boater this weekend. fri was a lightening thunder storm. couldn't even see my van in the parkin lot for the rain comein in. i was alone too. which is unusall for me. everyone else at the ramp was cussin and moanin, it's like whats ya gonna do. it's monsoonin. + it was dark. i don't usually boat in the dark not that i aint though. much more exciting. sat was good too. went out with the gf. late. some more boatin in the dark. man was a perfect night. 83* with a light wind. fiona apple on the cd. life was good. today, sun. was boatin with my buddy and his 7 year old boy. watersking. mostly for the 7 year old, but he couldn't get hip after many trys. so me and my buddy 47 and 48 respectivly got hip. man sure felt good to be on skis again as i didn't get hip last year. finished up the day with some high speed runs. the gf aint hip to them. my buddys 7 year old was though. me too...........this aristocraft is a wild ride at speed in chop.:D

mark42, get that vhf radio. it'll make ya feel much better about being out. i'm inland and i feel better when i'm on the river. it's a chance at least, if ya need it. and that's good. + ya get weather radio too. and that don't hurt either.....

I live for my boating and fishing. When the weekend arrives I am up at 5:00 AM and at the boat ramp by 5:45AM for a nice relaxing day on the water. I watch the sun come up and I stay in the water until the sun goes down. This is by far the most relaxing thing I do all week long and I enjoy every minute of it.

I'm too, appreciate just getting out in the boat with no particular place to go. My wife works odd hours as a manager which leaves me often with a nice sunny day and no immediate company....so out in the boat (on the lake) I go.
Even just to putz around trying to figure out how my fishfinder/depth sounder works.
Ahhh....definitely beats working on the house on a summers day.

Re: Who likes going out on the water for the sake of being on the water?

Actually I went from owning a boat and using it at times to living on it full time. For a number of years I lived a half mile from from a harbor that I kept my boat slipped in. After work during the summer I would go straight to the harbor, untie her and go out several miles and just shut it all off. I enjoyed free diving with a spear gun so I'd try to find some loose kelp floating at the surface. If I were so lucky to find it I would shut kill the engines and let her drift while I swam out to the kelp to hunt a little. A patch of open water kelp many times has good huntinng below it. Sometimes I got lucky. When the sun started to set I would light the fires and head for the harbor, I called it r/r after work. It wasnt as easy after I moved on board so I wouldnt repeat that move again.

I sure do, just like I like being in the woods during deer season. I don't have to catch fish or kill a deer to have a good time. I consider those things just icing on the cake.

Deer season starts in 5 weeks, but I will still have time for boating.:):)
