Wondering if Merc makes their own or if there is another company that is doing this for them.

That's like saying EverStart makes Walmart batteries. I go with the lowest bidder.

Wal Mart and probably Mercury dont really work like that. They send out a bid sheet stating what they will pay for a product made to their specs with a boatload of conditions attached i.e. so many units at such and such quality standards with X amount of reject and return rates. You play their game. In the case of Wal Mart its Johnson Controls that makes their interstate house brand and its one of JC's largest accounts. No one else has the manufacturing capacity to even build that many batteries much less undercut the competition doing it . Mercury filters are a knats *** to any large filter supplier and Mercury isnt going to have the pull that Wal Mart has when it comes time to price them. In any case Merc's markup is probably in the 500% or more range on that product.

Even if it is Wix or Purolator or anyone else that makes the Mercury brand don't get under the impression that any other filter made by the same company is going to be built to the same specs that the Merc Marine filter is made to. Mercury is going to have their own contract build parameters that may or may not be the same as any other filter made by that company.

Stick with the upper end of oil filters in the automotive world...even if they don't meet he 'mercury' specs (ridiculousness) they meet the standards set by most (if not all?) the engine manufacturers! I love how all the manuals say to 'USE GENUINE OMC/MERCURY' clearly an effort to steer boaters to purchase their products...while there are exceptions to this, using automotive for internals and/or service parts is acceptable and encouraged!

Outboards are obviously an exception...as Ford/GM don't make them...but I've used their respective brands of sparkplugs in my Mercury!!

Champion is probably the filter manufacturer as they are one of the few companies that specialize in that industry and who manufacture other outboard company's filters. That does not mean that Merc filters are the same as someone else's' with different paint, it means that the filter is made to Merc's specifications.

Re: Who makes Mercury oil filters?

Only Merc knows who made their filters for a given year, but I believe they are all the same.

I picked up 3 cases of Pennzoil filters several years ago for 3.00 a piece. They been working just fine, and Pennzoil doesn't make filters.

I get a kick out of these types of discussions. Everything, and I mean everything is built to a specification.

Every product has design, quality and performance criteria/specifications it must met. When selecting parts either for work or home, I match specifications, not manufacturers. Manufacturer's change regularly, specs don't
