About a HUNDRED YEARS ago before my bearing got fried I was taking my warmup spin while my wife parked the hauling rig. We have a 1993 Sierra 16 footer with walkout front powered by a Yamaha L4 3.0 Litre 130 Horsepower I/O. Well I like to come in HOT when the way is clear{we were the only boat on the lake at the time}so I was coming in at about 40 thinking I had the timing just right to shut down,trim the unit up and coast in to shore. But not taking into consideration that Iusually had 1 or 2 more people with me the boat stayed planed out a LOT farther and there I was with about 10 feet of 16 out of the water. Fortunately{?} there were two motorcyclists taking a break at the beach by the launch who aided greatly{chuckling all the while}in getting enough footage back in the water to make floating possible. Needless to say I haven't made that mistake again although I am looking forward to watching my wife shake her head each time I approach shore in that manner. GOOD HUMOR!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Bart,,<br />I had a similer experience just a few years back, had my sisters and one neice with me. Wife launched me, and I took the warm up spin while she parked the truck. I came into this short aluminum dock head on, like I usually do, but not quite at 40 mph. Went to hit the reverse thrusters, and holy crap, my seat had turned just enough to stop the lever from going back far enough to throttle up. I ended up hitting the dock straight on, and rode right up about 5 feet, past my front eyelet under the bow, and then the boat just slid back down into the water. Some slight gel coat damage, and small bend to the eyelet, but nothing that couldn't be reparied easy enough, and nothing that would take on water. But, my sisters said that if anybody could have seen the look on my face as I realized that I couldn't get it into reverse and was going to hit,, the Mastercart Priceless ads come to mind! My eyes were as big as golf balls they said! The best part, the wife never saw it,,and came walking over to the dock as if nothing happened. (oh the over-reaction if she had seen it!) My sisters were sure to fill her in on my little accident. Thank god nobody was standing too close, and nobody got hurt. It's something that I will never let happen again. And it's amazing at how quick things like that can happen. Glad you and your boat were alright. Good thing you didn't come into a breakwall or something hard!<br /><br />have fun<br />

Something similar happened to me this weekend (except I wasn't at fault). Coming in to the dock about normal speed. work my way parallel to the dock and still moving forward. Go to put in reverse, and the boat lunges forward at a good rate of speed.<br /><br />Come to find out, my shift rod broke while out on the lake and we were unaware of it. coming into the dock when I thought I had it in neutral, the boat was still in forward.<br /><br />Imagine mine (and my wife's) suprise when we took off fast forward when we thought we were applying the brakes!!!<br /><br />Scary feeling.

oh man the same thing happened to my pop and i. we were bring in our (than) manatee bow rider with a 115 yamaha and a non stainless shift rod in the dock at a good rate of speed. we have to come in fast to beat the tide sometimes. Dad driving, me in front with the boat pole and oh my god!!! Dad shifted in reverse and gave the boat, big throdle to stop it and charged the dock. yeeeeeeeee haaaaaa...... i dont know how i did it but i stoped the boat by driving the pole in to the seam of the dock and hitting the two by four croos buck...and put all my 240lbs into it.... the boat just tapped the dock no damage. sep for a new boat pole, ( to say i bent it a little is an understatement) and a new pair of shorts!!!! So friends check dem shift rods on your yamahas. you can see it in the little space on your lower unit if its cone shaped at all, change it.....peace, throw some big ones back for the future.. peace

Something similar happened this past Sunday, here at an area lake. <br />This little boys uncle came in hot on a PWC thinking he would swing it in to the dock. The 4 year old was standing on the dock, the uncle could not steer after shutting it down and ran into the dock and child. The child from what I understand will be injured for life. Legs and splean very messed up.<br />Sad that this tragic accident had to happen.<br />Something to think about.

I hate to be this negative but "comming in hot" ranks up there with letting folks ride in the front dangling legs in water for stupidity. The correct approach for any bank, dock or ramp is just fast enough to offer control and no faster. Usually I slip it in and take it out of gear at low idle and speed rather than bang a dock. It's better on the boat, dock and anyone on the dock.

I was barely moving. switching from neutral to forward (idle speed). The only difference was my boat was not going into neutral as I thought. That is why I went for the reverse to slow it down. When I went for reverse and nothing happened, I gave it a little more. In actuality, what was happening was I started moving forward faster until I cut off the engine and grabbed the dock.<br /><br />I do not think it is wise to come into the dock hot either. Now I have an extra reason. you may not be able to use the "brakes"

Just to set the record straight I DO NOT slam my boat into the shore (except for that once). As a matter of fact I usually wind up getting out into knee deep water to pull it in the rest of the way. THANKFULLY AND RESPECTFULLY BART (SEVERELY LANDLOCKED) SR.

Maybe everyone's done a variation on this Bart. I was coming into shore on next to a friend's boat already beached. The water is shallow so if you have manual tilt like me you want to cut power about 60' from shore and run aft to tilt the motor up while you glide in. So I cut throttle with enough speed to glide in gently to rest about 20 feet downt he beach from him and I'm just about to cut the motor and pull the leg up when I remembered I had seen a deadhead the day before at low tide just where I was headed. without thinking I gunned the throttle a little to get steerage to go around the log. Now I'm coming into shore too fast right for my friends boat with no time to turn. I threw it into reverse but by this time the leg had popped up from brushing the bottom, so now I had to jump over the windshield out to the bow like superman and basically leap off to form a human fender. Worst thing was the deadhead was long gone and I think my friend thought I was just hot dogging. Pretty hard to explain why you nearly rear end someone with empty beach in both directions for a long way.

YES on those RARE occasions when oddities occur you can either blow a gasket or do everything possible to protect the property (yours and others) if by chance anyone else is around. I myself found a little humor in my little to-do. My wife even mentions it with a smirk once in a while. So IF I get my unit wet again this year I will certainly be more cautious. I'll have to agree with peterfishbuster on this one. Coming in "hot" as they say sure shows some poor judgement on someone's part. I don't know about everyone else, but I work to hard for my boat to treat it in that manner. Just my .02 worth.

Just to set the record straight AGAIN I do not ABUSE my boat either!! A $9,000 investment for pleasure is nothing to sneeze at and my wife and I spend a lot of time cleaning and polishing to help keep it's value. So the only thing left to worry about is whether or not I can get parts for it ten years from now. THANKFULLY AND RESPECTFULLY BART (SEVERELY LANDLOCKED) SR.

I don't know, but someone said they were coming in hot like they like to do about 40. Now I have been to many a lake and have yet to see someone come at a dock at 40MPH. If I had I would #1, run, and #2 get me a WPO to have a talk with this person. I only know of docks in NO WAKE ZONES in my part of the country. As I stated before, it shows poor judgement on anyone's part to come in "HOT", because you don't know whats going to happen. <br />This you new boat owners, you don't do.

Just to set the record straight AGAIN Ihave always shut down plenty far enough out to coast in short of the shoreline with that ONE exception. Plus the fact that there are NO docks on the only TWO lakes that I boat on. As I stated before I usually have to get out in knee deep water and pull the rest of the way in. So think what you want.
