My boat I bought needs some "elbow grease". However, I made sure the floor was solid and the engine worked. I paid $1500.00 for it. The interior (VINYL) is going to be my main focus. Of course the engine will need some sort of tune-up. Aside from that, a nice coat of wax and a few weekends of "T.L.C." will turn the boat brand-new. It' a 1987 19 Foot Invader. The point of this thread is that you guys pay or at least think of paying a crazy amount for garbage. If you are into the whole restoring thing than by all means go for it. That 18 year old kid thinking about paying $1500.00 for that rat trap. It's not even worth the effort to saws-all it. All I am saying is that there are boats out there the same vintage in much better condition. Don't complain about your credit card balance or your lack of cash if you do decide to buy these boats.

Re: Whoa...

I AM NOT TRYING TO BE AN A-HOLE. I'm just expressing how I feel and giving my $0.02. My boat cost $1500.00 because I bought it in October. I could re-sell the boat for $3500 - $4000 come April. With what people pay for boats on this site. Hey, maybe I can find somebody willing to pay $7K.

Good luck with that a-hole ;) You are right, if you have patience and keep an eye out there are some good deals out there. The two boats I have now I paid much less than I could sell them for. One needed paint and varnish, the other just needed a wash and wax :D

I paid $400. NO rot. I have sunk 1k in the motor though. $500 for a lower unit, $300 for a couple needed ign. parts and $200 in stuff that just makes me feel better. :)

Re: Whoa...

Hollageo,

I'm glad you shared you $.02. As I'm sure you read in the thread by the 18 yo kid pretty much everyone was telling him it was a $500.00 boat at best. I'm sure you got a heck of deal on your boat. After you do your "some sort of tune up" (new pistons, rings, valves, crankshaft, cam, and don't forget those plug wires)I'm sure it will be worth $3500 or $4000. Just like the guy trying to sell his boat to the 18 yo kid thinks his is worth $1500.

Re: Whoa...

I don't know what your experience is with boats, but all the little things that put the finishing touches on a restore project can really add up fast! Many people greatly underestimate this. Chances are that your $1500 boat will cost you 2500-3000 by the time your done, maybe more depending how far you go with it. And then if you have an engine problem the $ could double. Most restores cost more than what you will ever get if you sold it. What it does get you is piece of mind that the job was done right, and a good solid boat that you can trust. Now with that said.....There is always a deal to be had(just have to be patient and lucky), and I hope you got one!!!

Re: Whoa...

Do those of you that completely gut out your boat and re-build it feel that you put to much time and effort? We make boating an expensive hobby. Companies know this and charge us outrageous prices. Is your project really worth all the work??? I do have a boat that needs T.L.C. (I don't have a 2006 Model). I'm not gonna deny that. Some of you guys who restore 19 foot run-abouts - Come on. Is it worth it?

http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/tellAFriend,p,147,00.html

Ok, after reading a few posts about the expense of refinishing a boat decided I would keep track and post it!
...1988 Citation 260Hp 20' Lazer : $ 3,600.00
Purchased in August 2003
.... New outdrive Alpha-1 $ 1,200.00 2004
.... New Misc. parts(filters,ect..) $ 150.00
.... Run Time appx. 100Hrs + since purchase
..... Quote on new vynil 1,200.00 winter 2006

Material for resoration this far... Appx. $250.00
this includes stanless steal gauge panels w/new gauges along w/glass and extra tools.

I have alot of friends with engine lifts, extra fiberglass cloth from boat yards, and so fourth.

I think the question you should ask is....do I have all the tools I need or know someone who does. If you have tools, friends, free time, a little basic know how, and the space you don't need to spend a mint.

Just a thought! If I was that 18yr old kid No way would I buy a project boat.

IS IT WORTH IT?
I will have appx. $6,500.00 into my boat when finished in 2006. I think yes! But you have to buy a boat that fits you. A newer boat this style would cost 15K-25k and a brand new boat is 30K + and mine will still keep up if not get to the dockside bar first when I play with the trim tabs.

Just my two cents.

Re: Whoa...

I am just finishing up a 1960 14' glass runabout that I completely gutted, pulled the deck and replaced the transom. I am into the whole thing for less than a grand including fixing up the big twin that was on it, and probaly 120 man hours. I also could never afford 15 to 20 grand for a new boat, so for me it is definitly worth the time spent for the peace of mind that my boat is seaworthy

Like people say, a boat is a hole in the water that you throw $$$ into. I think that the hole is only as large as you make it.

Re: Whoa...

Unless you're buying your dad's boat, or a good neighbour's etc where you were involved in it's history...any boat more than 5 years old is a total crapshoot.... so shoot low, keep the money for making the proper repairs and get reading the manuals. If you care about resale value, get mercruiser. (Or my reverse philosophy, get OMC 400/800 because you can pick up junk hulls with lotsa great/new parts for $100 to $200) The main thing is to get a hull that suits your needs, be they skiing, overnighters, fishing or some combination.... and if you need to trailer it make sure it's comfy behind your vehicle...
