I'm guessing it has to do with the ballast tanks. It almost looked deliberate.

Pilot error! Unfortunately, anybody can buy a boat without having to have any training or get a licence (in many states).

Never take a huge wave at 90 degrees. Never take any wave headon with a bowrider.

do it all the time in my jetboats, sometimes you just want to go swimming without leaving your chair! Pretty sure I wouldn't want to do it with a boat that has a transmission/gears though!

I'm curious how taking a wave at a lessor angle would be safer than 90 degress.

At an angle the wave could still swamp the open bow and they you also have the lateral rolling of the hull which in an extreme case could roll the boat no?

What am I missing?

At 90 degrees the bow rises over the crest of the wave and then the boat submarines as it goes into the next trough. That's often called sinking! (just like the video) Unless of course your speed is fast enough to jump from crest to crest. Then, thats often called "Oh MY aching gonads"

Run a big wave parallel and the boat will roll just fine.

If the waves are big enough to capsize the boat as you roll, then you have no business being in seas that heavy with that small of a boat.

This has nothing to do with how he might have crossed a wake. This is a matter of slamming the reverse gear from froward to reverse at that hight speed. (The same thing can't do the same kind of damage on a 'jet' boat, there is no reverse gear, just the scoop to reverse the thrust.) - Again, just stupid on that boat. But I suppose it is his to do with as he wants.
