why did you name your dog what you named him/her?

my 11 year old german shepard is named frank, over the years ive been asked why...and got comments like " thats an odd name for a dog" , "did you name him after a friend/relative"?.....or " thats a great name for a german dog".
it was none of the above.....i used to listen to a song, when i was a kid that made reference to a dog. when we got the dog i was firm on his name, but couldnt remember the song title or artist. a few days ago i walked into a guys boat shop....and the song was playing!! so this is how "frank" got his name.

I have a 6 year old Boxer/German Sheppard mix.Pic of him under my name on the left. He was named Punchy we I adopted him from the shelter at 6 months old.
We have a full blooded Boxer named Max Baer. My wife was trying to come up with a name, and I suggested Max Baer, and told her who he was and she liked it.
We also have a Chiuaua named Tuesday. We adopted her from the pound about a month ago. She is about 10 years old and she looked so sad in the shelter. Between the dog and my wife giving me the "puppy dog eyes", I couldn't say no, so she came to live with us.
I also have a cat who thinks he is a dog. We named him Lynard Skynard. Don't know how we came up with that name for a cat, but it's been 6 years so he is stuck with it.

The Dog in my avatar, was named "Cinnamon Nugget" She came from a long championship line of field dogs, she was a 6th generation grand national field champion, Unfortunately, it was not I that named her, My name for her was "Baby Girl" or "Little Girl"

Named mine "Woody", 12 years ago I was at the world champion snowmobile grass drags. Sitting at the camp fire one night, two kids walked up with a female, and male black lab, asked if anyone wanted them, I asked how much they said free. Took the male, had to name him after something to do with sleds. Picked" woody" After the name brand of track picks.
You should see the look on peoples faces when I tell them that I have to go home and play with my "Woody."

We got a beautiful Black Lab at the pound over 20 years ago. He had been dropped off by the owner's Mom (don't know, don't ask). Anyway . . . He was about 2 years old and they knew his name as Bear, so we kept it. Fast forward to around 8 years ago, Bear 1 was gone, and we got another male Yellow Lab. He came with a Pedigree and one of his grandparents had Polar Bear in his/her name. We named him "Not Your Average Polar Bear" and he is Bear to everyone. Sometimes Bear Dog. And he's anything but average for sure

My Buddy had a very well trained Red Heeler or Australian Cattle Dog, she had a litter and My buddy named them, Copenhagen, Grizzly, Kodiak etc etc, I got Kodiak and she was my best friend for 12 years, she stood beside me through countless women and never ever made me regret anything about her, yes she did sometimes embarrass me, she could peel the paint off the walls from the southbound end every once in awhile and she liked to roll in fresh cow patties but she was the best dog I have ever had, I miss her to this day.

Her name is "Foxy". She looked like a fox when we got her at the rescue as a pup. I usually call her "Monkey". Not sure why, just seems to fit. Best dog ever, and loves the boat.

When she is sleeping it looks like there's a snowball in her bed.

8 year old German Shepard named Puck. Grandson couldn't say puppy and called him Pucky. It stuck. Shortened to Puck.

We had a German Shepherd/Alaskan Husky mix that passed away at 15 years old. His name was Friday. For some reason when we got him at 8 weeks old, I had Robinson Crusoe on the brain. It stuck. I miss him.
We now have a Pound rescued Blue Merle Greyhound/Husky mix that is grey with black spots and some white hair sprinkled in. We named her Pepper. It fits. We also have a full blood Black Lab, her name is Kimber, named by the previous owners. She has some serious OCD!! Both of them are right around 3 years old now. Then we have a Rat Terrier/Dachsund mix that is name Shadow, as in "The Shadow Knows!" She is the most vocal of the three and the most shy and submissive to us (not the other dogs).
Then we have two cats, both Pound rescues. Midnight, our only male pet, a 13 lb black cat and Gypsy, a white with gray spots kitty.
No birds, no fish tanks, no guinea pigs, no rats, no mice, no snakes.
It is funny to see how each one has attached to a particular person in our family. Pepper is the "mommy" though and doesn't like it when I play with the other dogs. She will get between us and make sure I am not being mean.
All three are actually well trained, they sit and wait for us to say "OK" before they can eat their food. All we have to do is say "out" and they leave the kitchen when we are cooking. In the mornings, "Kennel up" means it is time for everyone to leave and they go open the door to the kennel and go in. (we don't trust them to NOT tear up the house without us being here yet, mob mentality)

funniest story,
one day i came home from a long day with a case of my favorite beer in tow,
the admiral gave me the look...
my pups just a waggin away just waiten for my attention

that day i decided that every time i bring a case home i'll bring some jerky for each one of them

fast forward a few cases
my girls see the case and wooooo party time they go absolutely bonkers

sooner than later the admiral catches on
only mad for a min tho till she asked me why i was laughing soo loud.
tooooooo funny
so every time after that,
she sees the case, rolls her eyes,
the pups see the case and go bonkers.


so now if she pics up my fav beverage
she even gets them the jerky,,, lol
and they go bonkers
i have to be some sorta genious
to create absolute happiness outa a trip for my fav beer
not sad to say its my crowning achievement

Lucifer is the name that came with my Black german Shephard. I can see why they named him that because he is evil sometimes. But we call him Batman, because all you see when coming up to the house at night, is Batman ears. He is jet black, and with a dimmed light behind him, all you see is a siloute.

Brandy the Beagle (6 years old)
Coco Loco the cat (5 years old)

All animals named after alcohol (Coco Loco ia Dominican drink)
There could be a theme there !!!

I named my last pitbull Clamp because he loved to clamp on stuff. My current pitbull is Goon - the kids call him Gooney Goon. It is sort of like Thug but Redneckish!

When I was a boy I had a collie named Georgia Tech. Older bro wouldn't let me call him Duke.

Last dog I had was named Strange. He looked like he was put together from spare parts of about 5 breeds.
