Fellas...

After several days of deep thought and soul searching, I've had a change of heart, and ordered a case of these to install on the boat;

I have also started classes for a skippers license along with my girlfriend, sister, father, mother, grandmother, and 3 cats (because they may like boating someday too!) . I realize this may be over-kill to pilot a 18ft closed bow boat, but you can never be too safe, right?

When It comes time to pilot the boat to a destination, this voyages details will be cleared by the USCG, fish and game warden, sheriff, fire Marshall, state police, FAA, CIA, and possibly the commander in chief.

Hopefully the water Marshall that I hired to monitor our voyage will greatly ad to my safe boating practices, and perhaps can act as a referee to determine who exactly would be the stand off skippers if we all go together.

If I make it safely to and from my destination (keep your fingers crossed), I will let you all know how my day at the sand bar was. :D:p

I'm with you on this Roger, except unless you have your compass properly lubed with Relative Bearing Grease and digitally wired to those mirrors, you could arrive in strange ports and not have the ability to find your way back. JMHO

And DO NOT forget to "tune" your GPS prior to heading out on the bounding mane.(I know it's a stretch...radar is more plausable to them, but not as common)

Dress up your wife(preferably)or other unsuspecting land lubber in an aluminum foil "hat", and have her/him walk up and down the dock or pier...just so you can get a "good fix"!!ROTFL!!!

Bonus points to you if you can get them to wear foil "mittens" or "cape".

Not that in the Navy there was any hazing going on...but there was NOTHING funnier than some poor seaman wrapped in foil walking the pier so that we could "tune" ours!;)

Why would you need mirrors. i can look 360 around me boat on every boat ive bin on i can. you shouldn't be that close to another boat that you can't look away for a few seconds to look behind you. usaally boats are open. even with a cabin i can still turn my head and see whats going on be hind me.

Yep

Re: Why don't most boats have mirrors?

I thought of adding a mirror on my 23footer for use in the ICW. I thought it would aid in keeping an eye on some of the fools around me. I never trust anybody's actions and give the right of way to all. Heck, I'm even a licensed captain! Doesn't make me an expert, now does it?

That's what I get for thinkin'.

Now I realize how stupid my thinking was!

Sasto,
My apologies, no offense meant toward the conscientious person who thinks a mirror or two will help them in a situation such as yours, especially while traveling the ICW.

My razzing was inspired by the fellow who feels that they should be installed on all boats by law, regardless of the boaters experience, location, and the practicality of doing so. Plus all the other well thought out mandates proposed.

I would fully support your decision to use mirrors Sir. :)
I'll even send you mine if they don't work out for me. Hope you like the style.. :D ;)

So why does Don's boat have only side mirrors and not centre ones?

Because he'd spend all his time 'primping' instead of paying attention to what's going on...

(i really hate myself for adding anything more to this thread...)

No worries, Rodger. My Lady brought up the subject a couple months ago. She thinks it's a good idea. We have one on the golf cart and I may just give it a try someday. It can't take the place of turning my head......but may help in some situations. I don't necessarily always wont another boater know I'm watching them.

Have a good day!

I left it out intentionally, just to see if there was anyone stupid enough to ask why there wasn't one.
