I was in wal-mart the other day, and the only Tv's they sell anymore is the flat screens.
I really don't care about HD or flat screen. I am fine with a big box tv.

I bought a 32 inch TV a few years ago at wal-mart for 250 bucks.

Not to get a 32 inch flatscreen it is about 4 to 5 hundred bucks.

There is something going on here with the TV industry getting in someones pocket.

You can get 32" TVs in the $300 range. If you actually paid $250 for a tube TV, it was probably a closeout since tube TVs are WAY more expensive to make than flat panels.

Its a simple answer,,,,,,,,,,,,no doubt the foriegn countries that make the TV's can put more flat screens in a sea going container than the old CRT style ones. Ship more at a less expense and the consumer pays more.....Go figure?

They still sell them at Fleet Farm and they even get Sunday ad space. I bought a 32" LED tv yesterday for a spare room for about $330. Watching a flat panel and a tube tv is a night and day difference. There is still a tube tv at the cabin. You can't even give tube tv's away any more.

CRT TVs are obsolete technology. . .like dial telephones.

Yep! It is like those old cell phones that you carried in a bag...

Ha Ha, my folks only got rid of the bag phone a few years back. My dad looked like a secret agent with a black portfolio walking around. To their credit the bag phone worked better up at the cabin.

but they are not more expensive to make than the new tvs are.
But the shipping space argument makes sense.

and why do these tv's take 30 seconds to turn on, and 10 seconds to change channels?
they are like computers now. that really annyos me not being able to surf chanels fast.

and how come i still need a comcast box to get certain channels, when these are supposed to be digital tvs?

Oh really? So how much does it cost to build these? How do you know it isn't cheaper?

The Comcast box is decoding the signal that the cable company is broadcasting. The TV tuner has no idea what every cable company broadcasts as a signal and what its particular decoding structure is.

Amen to that! I have a year used 36" Sony Wega flat screen CRT TV that I paid $1000.00 for. It's just sitting out in the garage under a pile of moving blankets. It has a beautiful picture for a tube TV but it weighs a ton AND no one wants them.

I could probably give it away but that is it. I put it on Craigslist last year for $100.00 and there were no takers.

I'm waiting for one of the kids to move out and get their own place so I can foist it off on one or the other of them.

Actually a cable ready tuner will get stations without a converter box. Problem is the channel numbers will all be goofy like 101.3 instead of channel 48 (just an example). The other thing is that you will not be able to get movies on demand, any movie channels like HBO, etc, or any of the music channels without the box.

They lasted too long and consumer electronics firms want you buying a piece of cheap chinese junk that is going to fail every 5-10 years to help their burgeoning economy.

I have a 10 year old Sony Wega 32'' tube that I dont watch and plan to have it for another 20 years.
Reluctantly parted with a fine working 30 year old Sylvania last year.
The picture are better on the good HD tv's is great I will give them that, superb in many cases and absolute rubbish in some low end cases.

AM Radio is still my most used mass media.

You apparently have a tough time understanding. What you paid for the TV when they were dumping them because they were old technology has nothing to do with what they cost to make. Here is a 32" TV for $309.

Bag phone had higher wattage output. That is why it worked better. I'm surprised it worked as long as it did. I don't think bag phones had digital capability. I think one of the first phones to have the analog/digital capability was the Motorola brick. They were gray and looked like a miniature version of an old military walkie talkie.

I've given away a box full of obsolete cell phones including my first bag phone, but I have kept that motorola brick and the two dead batteries. That thing cost $800 when I bought it.

What are you talking about when you say it takes too long to turn on? Mine has a picture on the screen with 3-4 seconds from the time I hit the power.

Changing channels is instantaneous.

this one i has takes 10 seconds to turn on, and takes 3-4 seconds to change channels.
it takes a little longer than direct tv takes to change stations.
and that is pretty long.
