My question is why don't many of you responders post your experience and training under your personal profile? The experience profile answers allot of questions right away on your qualitative input ability relative to the posting subject.
Open "User CP" then go to "Edit Profile" & scroll down.

What experience profile? I'm guessing because none of us know such a thing exists.

Re: Why don't you post your personal profile.

This is a free forum. The goal is to share experiences and to gain knowledge. I don't think very many people purposly mislead others but it's quite possible that some of us were given wrong information to start with and then pass this along to others. In many cases, those with more experience will point out errors.

I don't know about others but for me, responding to posts with your experience on the subject is how you pay back the rest of the members who have offered their experience and knowledge to you.

If you want certified or guaranteed experience and advice, I believe most dealerships and manufacturers will be glad to offer that service but it might cost a bit more than what you're paying here.

Re: Why don't you post your personal profile.

There are a few members who are professional marine mechanics whose advice and knowledge is given freely to the rest of us. Just reading some of the threads will quickly make it obvious who these experts are. The smart ones among us listen to them because they speak with years of training and experience behind their words. The rest of us vary from novice to semi-trained and/or experienced. I myself was an auto mechanic for many years, having grown up in the auto repair business. I've also worked on quite a few marine engines and systems, both my own and belonging to friends of mine. I offer advice when I can, based on my background and experience. I seek advice when I need to and am thrilled that others on this forum offer it. What more could you ask for? When you have a question, ask; and then think through the advice you receive. After all, the price is great. Safe boating, all. Hy

If the ones among us that are "all hat and no cattle" tell someone the wrong way to do something, what makes you think they won't put up ficticious qualifications on their profile. Speaking for myself, I'm a jack of all trades and master of none.

The level of experience and training don't matter? Just follow any of the responders advice and no problems, right? The posts here are not always as Polly Anna as you make them out to be. And there are polarizing positions that can be cleared up real quickly for direction by referencing "profiles", otherwise why have profiles at all? As you stated above, in YOUR WORDS---"the smart ones among us". What about the Newbies here, is he or she already one of the "smart ones among us"? That's who's getting the advice many times & that's why they are called Newbies. If somebody is going to give advice they have a responsibility to really know what they are talking about, even if it is free. Why send them down a path that was expensive and unnecessary? You do care about quality don't you? This is a great forum to learn but it could be improved in some areas.

Re: Why don't you post your personal profile.

I have to admit. I agree with a lot of what people are saying here. This is just a forum where people come together and get to know each other. Yes, there are a lot of experienced mechanics here. I for one am experienced with the automotive part of it for about 30 years and 17 with outboards. A lot of you here are newbies who are getting their first boats and trying to make heads or tails of an issue that comes up. Like some of you here have said, all you have to do is ask and someone is here, like a friend, to help out and give the best advice possible. If it is not the correct advice, then someone else will jump in and add to it. I can say that I can offer helpful advice, because I have repaired and sold a few hundred motors in my day, but occasionally, I might forget something and someone can feel free to correct me. Certain motors are long in my history and technicals are a little foggy, but it's okay. Here at iBoats, we're working with friends and neighbors and we try to make each other feel welcome. The only dumb questions are those not asked.

Re: Why don't you post your personal profile.

Bond-O and the rest of you guys have always given me great advice and I try to help with the knowledge I have had passed along to me as well, No I haven't worked at a marine repair shop or a manufacturing company but it doesn't mean that I don't have experience, I am learning every day and I do the best I can to offer good sound advice even though I am a Tree climber/cutter, there is a difference between being rude and giving solid sound advice, Bond-o rude?? Naa just direct in his answers, And I have never been offended, I expect and respect the direct answers with sometimes a little twist:D LOL I like that!! Cracks me up!!

Re: Why don't you post your personal profile.

profile doesn't mean squat that is in my opinion advice is what it is you can chose to use it or not and when you think you can stereotype someone by what they put in a profile you are seriously mistaken especially about thier abilities for example I knew a guy that couldn't read or write but he was the best machinist I and many of my mentor have ever seen or herd about so I guess if he was able to write and or type and he profiled himself that he could not read and write you would take him for an idiot? I have become an Iboats junkie for one reason besides I love boating and that is there is so much advise and knowledge here and it's free and have yet to be allowed to be misled because you make what you want of the advise you get here take it or leave it. DON'T try to make a must be qualified to give experiences and or advice to this site it will just ruin it. I learn something new here almost everyday.

Re: Why don't you post your personal profile.

From the stuff I have been reading in this fine forum, I strongly believe that each and every response to a "how do I?" post is testament to one's personal profile (as it pertains to the question at hand)

Some big guns, with scars on their knuckles and a farmer's tan that never goes away.

I raise me coffee cup and give them a toast
