Why is everything backwards now? LOL

Purchased a used OMC 800. Put it on, tested with earmuffs. Noticed the steering was backwards so I researched and found out about 2 diff worm gears. I elected to rotate my steering and it worked so out to the lake we go today and put it in reverse to leave the dock only to have the boat go forward. This is laughable now. What will be the 3rd thing? We were able to test the drive and everything was good except I felt weird using the shifter in the opposite direction.

We couldn't have screwed up the connection to the shifter behind the motor could we have? I am thinking more like it is at the other end. Can we drop the lower unit and switch the wires under the plate? The long and short on the top end only went in one way.

Throttle just unhooks and hooks back up on the shifter with a keeper. I don't see how that could have gotten backwards. When we shift it into forward or reverse, the controller reads the correct direction. I did put my prop on so I went out after some research and checked the props and they are both the same so no luck there. My lower unit is still good and I have a good cable. It was my upper that shelled out so maybe I will need to switch them out. Anyone switched out the lower and cable without removing the whole drive? Can I get it threaded through??

if you have a shift cable for a hydromechanical shift on a full mechanical shift it works backwards,I know this, the dealer sold me the wrong cable, kind of a wake up call when you go to leave the dock:eek:

or along the same lines. I once replaced a bad remote shifter with an OB shifter and the throttle was backward.

Well, we put my lower unit on and upper shroud. We were able to thread the cable through the upper without taking the upper unit off so 4 bolts on the cap and one retainer bolt plus the shift controller and we were done. Took it to the lake and I am back in business.

As for the backwards cable, we took it apart and thanks to the seloc manual, figured out that the short cable wasn't short enough. Through several experiments, we finally got it set up so we think it is correct. I am not going to put it back on for now to make sure though. We think the cable was so far past center that it created a backwards condition. Can anyone shed more light on this situation. We now have 4 7/8" on the short cable showing. Before there was a diff. between the two but not that much. It hooked up to the controller fine though.

Are the cables the same length? The only diff. we can see is that mine had a much bigger rubber housing than the backwards one.
