Re: Why We Hate PWCs...

this is a prime example why Florida, now requires anyone under 22 Y/O to take the safe boating course, and pwc course inorder to operate a pwc, under 16 cannot operate a pwc in Florida. and cannot rent on under 18 y/o.

Re: Why We Hate PWCs...

well, i just sold my pwc. my boat is in need of a full restore or a different boat. so now i'm boatless and NOT on the water.
so my feelin right now is, anything on the water is better than nothin at all.
really this confrentation between boats and pwc is mostly about education. if everyone was considerate of the other person this confrentation wouldn't exist.........i think the two can coexist if people would just think about how their actions effect others (boaters included). i know, that's a tall order. but perhaps someday.....
still cuttin on my trisonic goin for rotton strings and i cant find a replacement boat........:(

Re: Why We Hate PWCs...

PWC'a are the motor cycles of the water world. Fast, easy to manoever, and loads of fun...for the PWC driver. Our lake was nothing but boats until this year.

Now we have two of them at two different cottages. The drivers of both of them are courteous middle aged people that keep their distance from shore and other boaters.

Still, I would prefer if these folks had boats. The constant accelerating and decelerating noise is like hearing a chain saw all day on the water!!!

We had one MORON on the water this year. It was in a large inboard boat. I'm hoping it was just someone's guest and that he'll not be there too often.
This guy was gunning up to my stern of my 12 ft pontoon boat, just to stear off the last minute to blaze over my "wake" with... a TUBE he was dragging!:% We had waves which crashed over our platform and almost sent everything on board out in the water!!!

If that fat old nuckle head suddenly had a heart attack or stroke, he would have certainly killed us all with his driving. I noticed he was doing this all over the lake. He was too darn "dense" to think about going over his own wake by circling around.

If I had to choose between keeping PWC's on our lake and that boater, I'd coose in a heart beat to get that MORON boater off our water!!!

I never said "My cove"! Reread the post.

25' Cruisers? it's only an 80 acre inland lake. 18' is as big as we have on it. They are not the problem!

You epitomize the PWC mentality.

PWCs don't irritate people - people irritate people.

I wish this were entirely true but the problem is that PWCs are inherently irritating even when used responsibly. Add to this the fact that a significant percentage of PWC riders are inconsiderate of others and aggressive on the water and it's no wonder most boaters don't like them.

PWCs have a place on public waters regardless of what anyone thinks about them - but that doesn't mean we have to like them.

You know what I dislike more than the PWC. It's the idiots riding around with their thru hull exhausts roaring. You don't get any significant improvement in performance with most motors so what's the point. There is no peace on the lake anymore, all you hear is some dufus running up and down the lake making a hellish racket. My 350 powered boat with through the prop exhaust runs about 62 mph but it doesn't rattle every window on the lake while doing it.

Re: Why We Hate PWCs...

we are having a storm here, flooding, with 4/7" more rain on it's way, wind 35-40 knots with gust higher, just heard on the local news that the uscg had to rescue a pwc rider from the ocean city inlet in 14 foot seas, I have not heard his/her condition they could not recover the sea flea do to the conditions. I have operated very large vessels in these conditions and it is not fun, I really think that when someone buys a pwc or a rag shaker that the sales person must hit the ones that are not looking right in the head with a hammer just to make sure they leave stupid.. I am sorry to the folks that do use common courtesy, common sense, and have respect for others, and to the ones the sales person missed..........

and nothing sounds better that a big block chevy with dry exhaust echoing across the water..............

SWEET! I love listening to them out on Lake Michigan. I have to admit that the one time I encountered a drag boat on a small lake, it was not very pleasant. On Lake Michigan, single, dual or triple engines....music to my ears!

Re: Why We Hate PWCs...

I find that PWC's can bee anoying. My new neighbors at my lake house just bought one. They are nice people. The problem is that when they use it they just zoom back and forth, back and forth, bacckkk and foorrrtttthhhh...................along the shore line right past my house. The constant buzz coming and going for a cuople of hours is nerve racking. They only travel about 100yards and then turn around. Go right past my house and then turn around and buzz past again. They don't venture more them 50 ft from the shore line. I don't know what to do about it. I want to keep peace. Any peaceful suggestions?

Hahahahaha! I was thinking about exactly that. I could buzz back and forth with my 18 ft CobraJet 403olds V-8 in front of their house too. But I think the war would be on.

If you put out a line of floating buoys or white javel bottles, they may think there is a hazard and stay further away.

No they won't. They'll zig-zag thru em. You'll have to get one of these.

As JB and Pony said, I personnally dont hate Jet skis. I just dislike the brainless driver who doesnt obey any of the rules. And I dont mind if you use the cove, but if I'm fishing there leave me alone. Im sure there is more than one cove on the lake, and I'm also sure that all of them are NOT full at 6 in the morning on a WEEKDAY.

You PWC haters are the same old farts that scream if a kid in your neighborhood steps on your precious lawn. Remember when you laughed at such people?...now you're one of them.

The incident that you describe is one that shows how inconsiderate the operators of the PWC's can be. They just don't think. Those craft can zoom in and out just about anywhere. Boats on the other hand take a thought out plan when underway. Anyone operating a boat won't be charging into a cove, especially not knowing the depth. Those PWC's have a draft measured in inches.....and they're single digit inches.
They are banned from a couple of the rivers connected to the lake my home is on. They erode the bank which causes the trees to fall into the river. I have taken my boat down the rivers......slowly. I want to enjoy the beauty of the unmolested shore line. No signs of civilization. Pwc's use to just fly -past me and then 5-10 minutes later zoom past me heading back to the lake. I usually spend a few hrs. on this river. They sure weren't there to take in the sights. It was just another place to zoom thru.I fear that due to the thoughtless and inconsiderate operation , and it appears to be a majority, of the PWC's, the local authorities, Gov. will step in and start to regulate. The parents of the young PWC operators need to be more responsible. They should see to it that their children not only know how to operate these crafts but also how to operate them in a considerate manner. My father taught me to always steer clear of fishermen. Give them plenty of room. It is easy enough to do. Common courtesy. The attitudes of the young PWC operator sadly seems to reflect the attitude of an over indulged self absorbed generation. Their lessons will be hard learned because of their strong belief that that know it all. It's the parenting or rather lack of that caused the problem.

I beleive on most lakes unless it is private that the law states your must operate a watercraft 100 ft from shore, no wake zone, fishing boat, swimming area or anchored boat. If that is the case in your state, get a police officer to come over one afternoon and witness this himself, then they wont do that anymore!
