Re: why wont it go FASTER!!!

If that lever is pulled up toward you it makes the motor tilt up. If it is down then it locks the motor. If you pull up on the motor and flip the switch down then it does put the motor in shallow water drive but only if you are pulling the motor up. It does not matter what gear it is in. To get the motor tilt, take it off shallow water drive and let it drop all the way down. The switch should then go down and lock the motor. Simply pull the switch up to get the motor to tilt. I hope I am making sense.
View attachment 129844 Sorry but this is the best pic I have of it. My Duracraft is a 1970 model so it might be a bit lighter then yours.

just being curious because i dont know of anyone around my area with a 15 johnson like mine; and 32 mph would be the ultimate killer of my friends boat. can you tell me a few things about your motor?

1. spark-plug (brand and number on the side)? so that i can be sure why they are messing-up
2. how do you mix your oil 2.6 oz to a gal or 3.2? and what type of oil synthetic or not?
3. what hole do you have your tilt pin in?
4. do you know the size and pitch of your prop?
5. when you hit 32 what all was in the boat? fishing stuff, hunting stuff, battery/troller motor... or was it empty?

Spark-plug: NGK B8HS
I just do 40:1 to 50:1 mix
I keep it in the 3 tilt pin hole
Prop Pitch: 9.25X11 (aluminum)
32 mph when it was me and fishing stuff (no battery)
I use TCW3 synthetic from Quicksliver

1. put a new water pump
2. foot oil change
3. new autolite plugs wich fouled so i...
4. dumped the tank of gas that came with it and put 4 gallons of 87 with 2.6 oz of synthetic yamaha oil per gal of gas
5. and now the plugs are oily and the motor i jumpy (off and on) at mid throttle and real jumpy at full

Re: why wont it go FASTER!!!

Whoa, there sure is a lot of information in this thread, and unfortunately a lot of MISinformation.

First of all, 93 octane will do NOTHING if your engine is not specifically set up to run on it. In fact, since 93 is a slower burning fuel the engine could run worse. It will be specifically labeled as "premium fuel only" if it needs it. Otherwise, stick to the 87.

Number two: premium fuel is NOT cleaner and does not have more cleaning additives in it!! Gov't regulations require that all fuel be the same amount of "clean", octane is simply a resistance to detonation. Chevron, for instance, puts Techron in their fuel. They put it in ALL grades, not just premium.

Number three: Lose weight. Work out several times a day. This will help you out run him. And once you beat him, when you're in shape, you'll be beating off the women back at the dock who want to have a little rendezvous with the winner if you know what I mean.

OK so number 3 might be stretching it but one and two are accurate.

Waterinthefuel, be careful not to spread misinformation yourself. A 93 octane is NOT a slower burning fuel; octane rating only describes resistance to detonation as you wrote above. for a thorough explanation of octane see Frank Acampora's post #22 in this thread.

Are you putting ethanol treatment in your gas? I know that ethanol can really mess up an outboard. I always put in stabile unless its non ethanol gas.

Re: why wont it go FASTER!!!

That can defiantly decrease speed an make your motor handle rough. Ethanol is a solvent, absorbs water and can/will draw water into your gas. I would start immediately adding the fuel stabilizer. Clean out the carb, check gas lines, and fuel filter. After this you should see a huge improvement. I have an uncle who has a 07 25 Suzuki that he was running ethanol through. He described the same problems that you are. He cleaned out these things and now has no problems. He saw a big jump in speed as well.

Re: why wont it go FASTER!!!

i appreciate the info on octane and the timing deal.... but i don't feel comfortable retarding anything on my motor especially when i dont have a clue about timing and how it works.

i think ill try adjusting the tilt pin 1st then from there ill look at some different props. the local boat shop guy has some slightly used ones that he said i can try before buying

I believe when talking about timing Frank is refering to engine developement by the manufacturer not us boaters messing with timing.
When adjusting motor trim you will likely find that a notch isn't quite enough and the next up is too much and it stasrts to porpoise.
Sometimes you can move the gas tank and or gear forward to tame it.If its a gentle bounce just leaning forward will settle it down.

Re: why wont it go FASTER!!!

how would i test the spark?
Get a spark tester from an auto supply store and follow the directions.
I have to admit I have never used a tester but it will make it easier to get an accurate indication how strong the spark is.
You may need to check it cold and hot.I just find it interesting that the motor acted up twice on the return trip
which could indicate ignition may be failing as it heats up.

the motor should have plenty of time to cool we get to the hole by 4am hunt and so-on with the motor in the freezing water till 9am
