Last night just before 11:00pm in Adams county PA a wildlife conservation officer was shot and killed in the line of duty. They haven't released the officers name or exactaly what he was doing at the time of the shooting. The only thing they are saying as of now is what truck they are looking for and that he died. I have the deepest respect for any type of law enforcement personel and what happened is shameful and is a black eye on the hunting world. Your thoughts and prayers for this fallen man and his family would be greatly accepted. R.I.P.

I will post updates when released.

There's a big difference between hunters and outlaws. It's a shame people can't sort that out.

Re: Wildlife conservation officer

We were returning about sundown from a days fishing at Cedar Key, Fl., and I noticed some Wildlife Officers just putting their boat in, and I asked them where they were going. They explained, with night vision goggles in hand, and planning on being out there most all night, that all kinds of thievery, mischief and burglary goes on after sundown, scumbags will steal clam bags, crab traps, outboard motors, boats, anything they can. Theirs is a tough, dangerous and largely underappreciated job. I hope they catch the swine that shot that officer. He may have a wife and children at home! A very sad situation!

There is a huge difference from hunters to outlaws but to the non-hunting public there might not be one that is a shame. Every chance that certain people get they take down hunting and the right to own guns. This will be one of those cases. What really concerns me is I pesonally know the WCO of this area and a couple of his deputies. The WCO is a frequent visiter to our gun club and the vp of the club and 3 other guys became his deputies this year.

11:15 update
Police have a person of interest in the killing of a game commission offer is in custody, according to a state police spokesman. Christopher Lynn Johnson, 27.

10:45 update
The Adams County coroner has identified the state Game Commission officer who was fatally shot Thursday night in Freedom Township.

David Grove, 31, of Fairfield, was pronounced dead at 11:12 p.m. Thursday, according to coroner Pat Felix. He was shot in the head, she said, and it is unclear whether he was shot multiple times.

Grove was on duty when the shooting took place and may have been making a vehicle stop, Felix said.

According to the Game Commission, Grove was in the 300 block of Schriver Road to investigate reports of ongoing nighttime

David L. Grove was investigating shooting and possible poaching activity in the area.
An autopsy is being done at Lehigh Valley Hospital and its results should be in this afternoon, she added.

In a news release issued Friday morning, Game Commission executive director Carl G. Roe said the commission is shocked and saddened by Grove's killing.

"He was a bright, young officer who was dedicated to conserving Pennsylvania's wildlife resources, and promoting our state's rich hunting and trapping heritage," Roe said.

According to the Game Commission news release, Grove before being appointed a WCO Cadet, Grove had served as a Deputy WCO in Franklin County, from 2001 until 2007. Grove also worked at the Penn State University Deer Research Facility in University Park, Centre County, from 2003 until 2004

Grove graduated, in 1997, from Grace Academy in Hagerstown, Maryland, and he attended Appalachian Bible College, in Bradley, West Virginia, from 1997 until 1999. In 2004, Grove earned a bachelor's degree in wildlife and fisheries science from Penn State University.

Re: Wildlife conservation officer

I met him on the game lands last year and saw him at our gun club almost every month over this past year. He was a great guy who loved helping people and the community. He always had time to answer a question and provide insight to those who asked for it. I have seen him stop numerious people while on the game lands and he was always nice and upbeat. Every person I talked to that had been stopped by him said the same thing. He will be missed by the whole hunting/outdoor community. Again R.I.P.

Sounds like he was a fine young man. What could have been important enough to the perp that he was willing to take his life? Senseless. Those guys have a dangerous job.

About 35 years ago in Upstate NY my cousin's husband, a game warden at the time was investigating hunters "jacking deer" (hunting at night with lights).

They found him laying next to his jeep on a side road with a gun shot to the back of his head. They never found his murder(s). He left behind a wife and 3 beautiful daughters.

May they both RIP.

They released all of the details there in the link. The shooter did it because he was a convicted felon and he didn't want to go back to jail for having the weapon in the vehicle. Now he will be tried for the death penalty.

Ladyfish, I'm sorry for your loss.

Dedicated poachers are a different breed of cat. It's hard to imagine someone willing to kill another human for a little more venison or a big rack. Heck, I don't understand the guys who try to sneak out a couple of undersized bass or a couple extra walleyes. Varying degrees of meat hog, I guess.

I really admire conservation officers. I think it's the most dangerous job there is and I would be flat chicken to take it on. You never know when you're talking to some guy willing to kill you for the little bit of game he's taken.

Living in Montana, We are always confronted with the your just a bunch of dumb rednecks...but these situations really hit home! I am sitting hear with tears in my eyes, after I retired from the Military, I went back to school to get my degree in wildlife biology and work in the field every single day since I received my degree. There is no reason to kill anyone, and least of all the guys that become officers to protect our wildlife..my heart goes out to this family, after working in the field for so many years, I understand why he became a wildlife officer....

Really All I can say is man! This is really sad..

Sorry to hear about this.

I think that a lot of people have very little understanding of just wildlife enforcement agents do. From the outside looking in, it may seem like they just "go play in the woods." I once read a book by a former Louisiana wildlife agent, in which he described undercover operations to catch poachers. Is was very interesting and made me realize that these guys are in a lot of danger, simply because a huge percentage of the people that they deal with, are armed.

My condolences to the famly and all who knew/loved Agent Grove.
