It's gonna be tough the way music has diversified and is all so readily available. But never say never.

This world has seen enough elton john's. IMO he can't sing that well anyway.

I sure miss Paul McCartney though.

Thank all that is good that WITF mentioned a Beatle. Why are the Beatles never on these lists? They created the SuperGroup and paved the way for all of these guys . . . Also, Elvis wrote like 1.3 of his songs (not 1.3%, like 1 and a third), the Beatles wrote like . . . uh . . . 99% of their songs (there were a couple of covers).

IMHO there are some great songwriters today and believe it or not some like Beyonce Knowles and Christina Aguilera write their own material. I know you guys are screaming "no, not them", but my point is famous, SuperGroup types, that write their own songs. Some would argue that Green Day is what you describe . . . Many would say that U2 defintiely fits your list, but maybe too old.

It is different now, for sure. The demise of the Album may be part of that. I don't mean vinyl, but on-line music is gonna kill the whole assembly of an Album that may have driven some of the SuperGroup stuff

Elton John and Bernie Taupin are/were an outstanding songwriting team.

I think the current problem is all the kids are listening to is pop, rap & hip hop. Good ol' guitar-based rock began to decline after the "hair-band" era. It got to the point where the "can you top this" guitar work could no longer be topped. It then degraded into alternative/grunge which really had no substance & little to say. Kids looking for something "cool" had to go in the unfortunate (for us) direction of the rap culture. Can't wait for that to run its course & die off - maybe then we'll see a turnaround.

There is plenty of good stuff for a 50 year old rocker being made by current young artists :)

Its just more dulited and hard to find because of the huge volume of crappy stuff you have to look through

With all due respect QC, and not meaning to trivialize the Fab Fours's impact on music our generation or culture in general...................... the Beatles were a short run wonder band. But I should have had Sir Paul on the list.

I just read the other day where the CD is on its way out to be replaced by downloaded music. There will be no more "physical" means of recorded music. It will all just be information on your MP3, IPOD, Computer or whatever. I'll never get used to that! :^:^

IMHO QC, a bit too technical/mechanical of an analysis. It didn't much matter who wrote what, it was the end appeal of the performer that counted. No doubt the content was an important part, but not who wrote it.

IMOHO, unless popular music changes, I don't think you'll see any/many new long lived superstars as in yesteryear. I keep telling my 19 y/o Son, that when he is my age, none of his current crappy screaming music will be anywhere to be seen or heard.

Heck, Elvis today, makes just about as much money as he ever did. That means that he is attracting new listeners as well as re-interesting all the old boomers. And all that, 30 years after his death. That's gonna be a pretty high standard to equal.

Re: Will there ever be..............

I pretty much can listen to every genre of music. Including Rap and Country. That being said, some of my favorite stuff falls into the genre of classic rock. Zepplin, Floyd, The Who, Tom Petty, etc etc etc.

There is still lots of good music being made by new artists now that falls into that type, you just have to know where to look and understand that the MTV's and VH1's of the world are catering to a specific audience.

I don't think there can be another Elive etc, simply because now the radical is the norm, and nothing surprises anyone anymore.....

I respectfully disagree. I will agree that the end product is the final test, but without a great song written there ain't no performance to praise.

And that is why I also respectfully disagree with LT's flash in the pan description of the Beatle's. A local radio station in LA tried to cancel their 20 year running Sunday "Breakfast With the Beatles" show and they got so much fan response they brought it back. Almost all of their songs stand the test of time, especially 66 - 70. They invented progressive rock, the concept album, feedback, multiple recording techniques (Martin), heck they basically invented the "band" that this thread longs for, the list goes on and on . . .

BTW, I think Lennon was an idiot, but a good songwriter, I think McCartney is a genius.

I like McCartney's wings stuff a lot.

A few perople whose influence can't be forgotten. Niel Diamond is possibly one of the best lyric/song writers out there.........and David Bowie.
