another Elvis, Stones, Floyd, Who, Elton John.........................
QC said:Thank all that is good that WITF mentioned a Beatle. Why are the Beatles never on these lists? They created the SuperGroup and paved the way for all of these guys . . . Also, Elvis wrote like 1.3 of his songs (not 1.3%, like 1 and a third), the Beatles wrote like . . . uh . . . 99% of their songs (there were a couple of covers).
IMHO there are some great songwriters today and believe it or not some like Beyonce Knowles and Christina Aguilera write their own material. I know you guys are screaming "no, not them", but my point is famous, SuperGroup types, that write their own songs. Some would argue that Green Day is what you describe . . . Many would say that U2 defintiely fits your list, but maybe too old.
It is different now, for sure. The demise of the Album may be part of that. I don't mean vinyl, but on-line music is gonna kill the whole assembly of an Album that may have driven some of the SuperGroup stuff
Elton John and Bernie Taupin are/were an outstanding songwriting team.
I respectfully disagree. I will agree that the end product is the final test, but without a great song written there ain't no performance to praise.Boomyal said:IMHO QC, a bit too technical/mechanical of an analysis. It didn't much matter who wrote what, it was the end appeal of the performer that counted.
And that is why I also respectfully disagree with LT's flash in the pan description of the Beatle's. A local radio station in LA tried to cancel their 20 year running Sunday "Breakfast With the Beatles" show and they got so much fan response they brought it back. Almost all of their songs stand the test of time, especially 66 - 70. They invented progressive rock, the concept album, feedback, multiple recording techniques (Martin), heck they basically invented the "band" that this thread longs for, the list goes on and on . . .Boomyal said:I keep telling my 19 y/o Son, that when he is my age, none of his current crappy screaming music will be anywhere to be seen or heard.

I dont think I have ever heard of them folks. They must be some of the people Patsy Kline gave singing lessons to. :^
