Winch Strap

The last time I pulled my boat in from the water, I noticed the first foot or so of my winch strap was discolored (faded) from the sun, while the remaining coil of strap still looked new. Is there a shelf-life for the winch strap for replacement? I'm concerned that the sun could have deteriorated the fibers of the strap and it needs to be replaced. Thanks for the advise!

A little fading from the sun is okay as long as the strap isn't frayed. If it starts to get frayed along the edges you might want to think about replacing it.

I'd inspect the threads for abrasion and carefully look at the stitching which holds the hook to the strap to ensure the stitching is still intact.

As long as it feels very flexible it's fine. It's when they start to stiffen they fail and it WILL be at the bow eyelet from the sun.

When the exposed bit gets sun-faded, cut it off and re-attach the hook with a bowline knot in the strap. There's typically so much extra strap, you can do this several times over the life of the trailer. I still have the original strap on my 11 year-old trailer. It's been cut back and tied twice, so far.

Yeah that's how I nursed mine along for 20 years. In hindsight not the best plan considering how cheap they are to replace.

Anywhere that sells boating supplies. Iboats, walmart, bass pro shops, etc.

I broke my winch strap the other day, was just snugging it up and snap! Bought a new one at Cabelas for 14 bucks...

Make sure you get one with the correct breaking strenth.

Go to Lowes or a swimming pool place and buy one foot worth of that flat when empty roll-up discharge hose.
Cut it to a length that will cover the exposed length of winch strap.
Slide it over end of strap.
Sometimes it is a struggle to get it past the hook.

Why, Did something happen? My winch takes a 3" wide strap and they are tough to find. Made the decision to put a knot in it very easy.
