Wow, from what I have read, the IRS is paying Microsoft over 11 million dollars for 1 year of custom support, the UK is paying them 5.6 million pounds and the Netherlands are paying 5.5 million pounds, that is a lot of money for a years worth of support, I am in the wrong business!

I installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I think I am going to try and install 14.xx LTS server today.

Yes you are considering the same fixes are probably going out to all of them.

Not me, I know my way around the various windows product to come up with my own fixes, no way I would pay them, besides they are saying the paid support is only for corporations or governments.

Let us know how you like it. Ubuntu is easy to get used to and if you don't like something you can change it. I don't like the min/max button being on the left (opposite of MS) but you can go into terminal and enter code to change it to the right. The best thing is the office suite. If you like XP you will like Ubuntu. No hardware issues with me it has been plug and play.

I haven't played with Ubuntu server much but I have never really liked Gnome or Unity.

Kubuntu is ok though!! (KDE version)

I remember back in 2004, The city of Munich GE wanted to upgrade all their (roughly 15000) desktops computers and servers to WinXP.

MS made them a proposal in the many millions of dollars. Munich didn't have a choice after all. MS was discontinuing support for Win98se and 2000/NT wasn't far behind and and NO ONE in their right mind would switch to Win ME!

So they were "stuck" until IBM offered to switch them to SuSE Linux Enterprise desktop and SUSE Linux server etc for about Half what MS was going to do it for.

They didn't do that either but now are in the final phases of migrating everything to Linux and as it turns out they also decided on a distribution (of their own) called LiMux

From Wikipedia:

LiMux is also the name of the Linux distribution being used for the project. LiMux is the first Linux-based workplace certified for industry use (ISO 9241) by the T?V IT, Technical Service, Germany.[SUP][8][/SUP] It was first based on Debian, but later changed to Ubuntu.

I haven't followed their progress in years but now it appears that they've already saved over $14mil (USD) over what it would cost to do Microshaft.
