How do you make an inlay? Do you cut the wood out to match the leaves or design or do you just lay the design on the wood and varnish over? You do nice work.

Re: Winter Woodworking Projects 2009

First you have to make the inlays. These are shapes usually 3/8"-1/2" thick. My first ones were butterflies in tables at the board joints to hold them tight. Then I progressed to the geometric shapes in the triangular table (above). These shapes are fairly simple to do and look good without too much time.
Start by tracing your shape on whatever wood you want to use. Mind your grain. Simple shapes like a butterfly or something geometric can be cut with a bandsaw. The more intricate things require a scrollsaw.
Next lay the inlay over where you want it on your board. Trace around it. I use a lead pencil so the line is fine...but hard to see - a trade-off. I have a Fein laminate trimmer with a plunge base. Using a downdraft bit (or updraft), set your depth just a little less than the thickness of the inlay. Remove the bulk being careful not to go outside the line. Clean up with chisels. For sharper areas such as tight corners, I use an Xacto knife with a heavy blades (for an Xacto). Don't worry about getting the hole perfect. The closer the better, but it can be very time consuming to get it perfect. Glue in place. File, shave, plane, and/or sand off excess above surface. Use putty for any gaps (putty is my buddy!). Sand. Finish. Viola! You have your first inlay.

Re: Winter Woodworking Projects 2009

Here's the table I'm working on.

The first shot is (half of) the surface which is pretty much done. You'll see butterfly inlays here. The third shot is the legs. I have a little sanding to do on the bottoms yet. This area is tough to get right.
What I was working on today was the 'box' that will attach underneath and allow the legs the attach. I forgot to cut a shallow vee in the boards though so they will match the other pieces. oops. I ran out of walnut so the closest thing was a piece of purple heart. another oops. But, what the hey. The second picture shows how I biscuited the joints together. I love biscuits! The fourth picture is the box all glued up and wrapped with a band clamp. Finally, the last picture is everything just sitting there upside down but all together (not glued or screwed yet). Obviously I have to wait for the box to dry before proceeding. This all went quicker than I thought. So now I'm gonna have to take the wife to Wally World for a new boulder holder.:(

Thanks for the instructions. I printed them off and I may try a project or two next winter. Right now I'm trying to finish my last winter project this year a Lighthouse. You sure did some beautiful work there though. Thanks again.

Thanks.
I'll keep the pics coming with progress. I'm just about in the home stretch ... a little more sanding...attach all the pieces...final sanding ... Watco ... polyurethane ... done.
I feel like I'm hijacking your thread! ...don't mean to...sorry.

I've always wanted to do a lighthouse. I have an old artesian well out the front door I was thinking of turning into one. The well was filled in years ago of course. Half the neighbors voted to turn it into a tiki bar. Boaters - go figure.:):):)

Pictures, pictures, we want pictures!!!:)

Throw some heat out in the shop.
I picked up a small (caboose sized) pot belly stove from a fellow WWer some time ago. It's great for getting rid of all the scrap!

Re: Winter Woodworking Projects 2009

Well, I got the skirt attached to the bottom of the table today. I used about a dozen and a half 3/8" fluted dowels to attach them together. I was going to get a fresh picture, but forgot to take the camera out to the shop.
There's always tomorrow! I have to attach the legs tomorrow. I'm leaning towards doing a through mortise and then tenon two sides of each of the legs for the strongest joint.

I pu the last coat of stain on the computer desk. I will get pictures soon. Now I get to make a leprechaun trap with my youngest daughter for a school project. This should be fun. I will take pictures of both when done.:)

I am jealous, I lost my garage when we moved. Right now all of my "creative energy" is going into rebuilding a 100+ year old victorian (house not woman).

Although, I do have a small project sitting idle right now. The "Diaper Dingy" is a childs rocker shaped like a dory. Most kids get rocking horses, mine is getting a rocking boat D). I have a little time to get it done, she is only 3 weeks old.
