Does this sound correct so far:
#4 cable from pos. battery to solenoid
#4 from neg batt to side of motor
#4 from solenoid to starter
No other wires to the starter?

Did you ever get your throttle tower problem fixed??

Also from your question on the cables, do you have all of the smaller wires in the harness going to the correct areas? They will keep you from starting if not and will make you think you have problems that you don't. From what I remember about a previous post you said you had a snarl of wires?!

I believe the tower mwill be ok with a good greasing. I haven't got it back together yet. I figure she's gotta start before she goes.
Yes there's a snarl of splices and wires that connect to nothing. I only need my lights which currently work. I just use a plastic tank and hose so i will skip the fuel gauge, don't smoke so I'll skip the lighter. There is a fuse holder under my dash, is that my junction box? I want to skip that too and just run wire from the battery for my lights. #12? And from solenoid to key #14?
The auto store guy said my solenoid should be ok, the old connections had some green on them, but they're all brand new now.
About the marine solenoid - safer in case of sparks, good reason but I'd be willing to chance it BUT this exact quote from my book scares me-A magneto key switch operates in REVERSE of any other type key switch. When the key is moved to the OFF position the circuit is CLOSED between the magneto and ground. In some cases when the key is turned to the OFF position, the points are grounded. For this reason an automotive type switch MUST NEVER be used, because the circuit would be opened and closed in reverse and if 12-volts should reach the coil, the coil will be DESTROYED. end. Hogwash or what? My automotive one is installed but if you recommend the marine I'll grunt and change it

They are talking about the key switch, not the solenoid. On a boat the key switch connects the two "M" wires together on "Off" position to kill the motor. On a car the key switch disconnects two wires from each other to kill the motor. Both key switches do exactly the same thing when you turn the key all the way to "Start" - send 12 volts to the solenoid via a little wire. That closes the solenoid rely and allows the big honking 12 volt positive wire from the battery to the starter to flow though the solenoid and power the starter.

On the snarl of wires, I was wondering if you still had the original harness wiring or "made up" wiring that you are dealing with. From what you are saying you have all your probs worked out except for "accessory" wiring. Definitely use the correct solenoid switch. Anything else can keep you guessing to other gremlins.
