Some time ago someone posted a neat and simple diagram of batteries wired in series and parallel. Searching has turned up nothing. Does anyone remember where it is?

This should help you distinguish between the two wiring schemes.

Thanks all, those make it a lot easier when trying to explain the wiring to someone.

Silvertip...my question is referencing your diagram for parallel connection of two 12v batteries: When connecting them to a power source (ie: switch pannel, buss bar, trolling motor), does it make any difference if the positive comes from battery A and the negative comes from battery B or should both the positive lead and the negative lead come from the same battery? Just curious.

No! You will get 12V either way.

Re: Wiring batteries in series and parallel

Could someone add a battery switch to this diagram.
IE. (#1,#2,Both,Off).
Thanks

Re: Wiring batteries in series and parallel

Think of the two batteries in a standard flashlight. They are 1.5V in series and yield 3V to the bulb.

A typical 12V battery is made up of 6 2.15 to 2.23 volt cells in series.

In series doubles the voltage.

In parallel doubles the capacity.

You can tap from the + and - terminals wherever it is most convenient if you have a bank of two batteries in parallel.

Wiring diagrams thread link.

Re: Wiring batteries in series and parallel

I don't know how to create a new subject matter. I have 2 situations. First I am dealing with a Motorguide Brute 756 trolling motor. It is 12/24 volt. I have the following wires going to the battery area. Red, Orange, Black/White strip, and a jumper between the batteries. What goes where? Next issues is on the foot pedal. What do all the symbols mean?

I think this is what you need.

But you need to provide more information on the motor and your boat. To use the motor in BOTH 12V OR 24V operation the batteries AND the correct trolling motor receptacle need to be wired properly. Tell me what you have now. Is there a panel at the front of the boat that has a switch on it that says CHARGE/RUN? How many terminals are there in the trolling motor receptacle. Look at the back of the receptacle and note the color and number of wires. The cable from the motor should have three wires in it (Red, orange, and black). Red = +24V, Orange + 12V and Black = Ground.

What symbols are you talking about? The controls are simple. Speed, left, right, and momentary/continuous. Speed sets the speed of the motor. left and right you should be able figure that out. Mementary means the motor will only run when you step on the pedal. Continuous means the motor runs constantly at whatever speed you have set and you don't have to hold your foot on the pedal.

Silvertip,
The diagram is wonderful. You are heading me in the right track. I have a Motorguide Brute 756 trolling motor. 12/24 volt. There are 4 female terminals on the plug attached to the boat. One terminal has a red wire, one has a orange wire, and one has a black wire, and one has a black wire with a white strip. The same terminal as the strip wire there is a black with a green strip on it.
On the incomeing plug side of the motor there are 4 male terminals. On the outgoing side of the plug side it then goes down to 2 wires.

The symbols I see on my foot pedal are 1 dot, 2 dots, 3 dots, 4 dots, 5 dots, and 2 dots in a circle. They are located on a rotery dail to the side of the foot pedal.

You didn't mention if the boat has a switch panel in the vicinity of the trolling motor receptacle, or if there was a 12/24 selector switch on the trolling motor foot pedal. Here is one more configuration you may be dealing with. Without a switch to go between 12 and 24v your troller may be wired to run on 24v only. The dots on the dial are speed settings.
