Won it in a poker game - sort of...

Ok, I admit, I like playing poker, a lot. We have a group of us that get togther a couple times a month to play. Some times we play for small stakes, some times the stakes get higher. Our general rule is, we can each bring a guest as long as the guest understands there is no welching and no one is going to think less of you for folding and walking away. In other words, don't play if you can't afford to lose your bet.

A friend brought a guest, the poker got hot and heavy and the guest threw in the keys to his boat in the pot to cover his bet. EVERYONE asked him "Are you sure?" Several times. He insisted he had the winning and and wanted to do it. He lost, I won, and now, yup the guy wants to wetch on the bet.

Bad feelings all around and our friend is no longer allowed to bring a guest. That upset him and he wants to go get the boat for me but I think its unlikely and will turn the situation even worse.

Any thoughts?

Personally, I can't stand a weltcher but that is just me.

Well, maybe it's me and I am a pretty stand up guy...... welshing on a bet is NO good..... Had that person won the hand he would have expected everything in the pot..... no one is allowed to remove a bet once it is placed.

Now as a kind person...... what was the value of the bet? Was his boat tossed in to cover a specific amount of money (as a call)? OR was it tossed in as a raise? I would fully expect that amount of money now or the boat which HE placed a value on.

Well even though the guy is backing out of the bet and thats crap...I would let it go and not allow the friend to invite anyone to the games any more. You really didnt loose anything and its going to be hard to get the guy to hand over the boat, and the cops really cant help you. Just MO

Well having done something stupid like that, the dude needs to man up, and hand over the boat. Plan and simple.

It takes a lot of b*lls to throw your boat in on a game of poker, but if you gotta 'em, I think you have to stand behind it and pass over the boat.

Reality is, you're most likely never going to see the boat. I think as a settlement, he should be banned from future poker games and forced to change the name of his boat to "The Welcher" so everyone who sees it knows that's what he is.

I love playing Hold Em but I would never throw my boat keys on the table, "maybe the wife." LoL :)

*craigslist*

For sale is a 1995 Gambler :)D) boat, runs great, needs nothing. Have to sell ASAP to settle gambling debt. Can be seen at 123 Maple Drive, just come on over and have a look, keys are in boat, feel free to start it up. Call or come by any time of day or night. If wife answers, ask her the story of why the boat is being sold,,, it's a real funny story.

You guys need to learn how to play poker! Ever hear of "table stakes"? You can't be bet out of a pot, even if you run out of money... And you can't add funds to your stake in the middle of the hand! There's never a need for a player to put in his car/boat keys to remain in the hand!

After the fact, it's still welching! You know it's unenforcable! Don't invite him back!

If everyone else was betting that same 4K, I'd be insisting on either the boat or the cash he used the boat in lieu of.

Next time there is a poker game, ask for a new rule that "hosts are responsible for the bets of guests" for all future games. You are, after all, going on the word of the host that the guest is a stand up player. I bet you'll begin to see a lot more hosts kicking guests off the table when the bets get up there.

Accepting a wager that is not actually cash or chips on the table is just plain dumb. Betting what you aren't willing to lose is even dumber.

The guy is not only without sense, he is without honor.

Let me help ya out man...

Ring, Ring...

"Hey this is Bubba1235. Just thought I'd swing by this afternoon and pick up that rig. Be by in a few minutes. OK, bye."

When you pull in his driveway...

"Man it sure is great of you to stand by your word. You know there are some guys who might have waffled on something like that. You are a true gentleman and a stand up fella!"

As you are getting in your truck with the boat hooked up...

"Maybe we can go fishing some time?"

You might not want to add that last part, but, as long as the bull was flying...

Have fun!

Reminds me of some poker games I played while back in the college fraternity.

Brothers were always trusted and a slip of paper with their initials and the amount was legal tender in our games. I once played a game in which I actually won over a $100.00 but when I left the table, all I had was I.O.U.s and no cash.

This sounds like one of those deals where the next time he takes out his boat he will find that someone has drilled a hole through his hull just inside of one of the bunks on the trailer.

Of course he will know it was you and it goes too ways from there,....

1) he knows he got what was coming to him and it ends there.

2) he is so angry that he retaliates and this escalates until someone is dead or in jail.

As tempting as it is to just let it go, and save friendships... I wouldn't back down without at least an honest effort to get the cash value at the very least..... of meet him half way.... at $2k and it's still 2k you didn't have....

Nice hand tho - I play a ton of online poker myself, and the poker stakes as mentioned above are in force, you can't spend more than your buy in...
