This is what "table stakes" is. The low stack can put in all his money, and his right to the pot is protected! Any additional betting amongst the others would continue normally and be collected into a side pot! But you still can't pull out money in the middle of a hand, which is what happened!

Hehe, and here I thought we were doing something unique. At our table, in order to bet a boat, someone would have to buy it from you before you made a bet. You could only bet using chips, not cash/stuff, so a sale would have to happen before a bet could take place. Although we didn't plan on the welching scenario, our method would have made it a legal transaction, as the person would have sold the boat and bet the proceeds, not bet it directly.

In most (not all) casinos, they allow cash to play, some only allow hundreds to play. None that I'm aware of allow boat keys or the such! :D

Just out of idle curiosity...... have you recently spoken to the guy who lost his boat? What are his feelings?

I hope he would see his way clear to doing the honorable thing.

I actually wonder if he has had a gambling problem in the past....

Good for him, and you! At least you have an idea on where things might go. 4k for gas? sounds like a good idea.

"Never welsh on a bet"

"Never bet more than you are willing to lose"

"Put your money where your mouth is"

Many a man, and woman have lost everything from their dignity to their horse using their egos to bet with.

Personally, I hate someone who bets with the intention of never paying up however, its a personal decision on whether or not to hold him to it based on other circumstances.

This is why a drunk should never bet.

I am strictly reading between the lines so I may be way off base but it seems the problem is that he doesn't want momma to know anything about it and a disappearing boat would expose him. :(

We shall see come Friday...

If that's the case, he's trying to own up to it by meeting you on Friday to discuss how he can own up to his bet, and still not live in the doghouse. Better than outright welching on the bet.

So, am I the only one now sitting here making little whip cracking sounds in his head? :) Afraid of momma, poor guy.

Sounds like he definitely does want to make up for the bet..... but to be on the safe, get to the bar early, drink heavily and leave the tab for him... hehe

Keep us posted. Good luck

He prob regrets betting it, likes his boat and maybe figures it's worth more than $4K. Rather than man up and either give it up, or say I screwed up, how about cash instead? He's implying that it's the ole ball and chain hoping you'll be more understanding to some degree of modifying the bet or some degree of welching. Any way you cut it, his lack of character is showing through.

When you and all your buddies were asking him if he was sure about the bet, and would he be OK if he lost, why didn't he take back his keys and say his wife would kill him if he lost their boat?? That was the time. Ditto what's said above.. this is all b/c he lost. If he'd won the hand, he'd have scooped up your money and been whistlin' on the way out the door.

PS; good luck with the meet today... maybe it would be good idea to be sitting having a brew with one of the game organizers when he walks in... if it's just the 2 of you, he could claim after that he tried to make good but you were being an @ hole. He might figure he can save face in town that way.

Long story short, he told us he had a gambling problem years ago. . .

To me that's kind of like saying "I had herpes years ago." ;)

Good for you for not being an "enabler." If he were allowed to get away with not honoring his bets, you can bet the problem would get a lot worse.

I hope that maybe this incident jogs him into swearing off gambling. You can be certain of one thing, he won't be playing poker with us again...

I wouldn't bet on it (pun sorry).

How do I know? He wrote you a check from an account that nobody will know about except him (and you).

I had a friend in the same situation, bad, really bad. He was $50K in gambling debt and was writing bad check faster than he could get them ordered from the numerous banks he had accounts at. He was always thinking that if he could "just win that next hand" he would make it. So bad.

I gave up playing cards many, many years ago. To be sure I did win more than I lost, but, it could have just as easy been the other way. I was nervous that I could go right down a path like this fella. Loved the game, loved the adrenaline, had to walk away. Besides, since I turned my life over to The Master it doesn't jive with how He has things laid out for me.

You did the right thing as he needed to own up to his own responsibility. But probably more importantly, this MIGHT be a piece of the puzzle that may assist him in making the right choices down the road. Had you let him off, it would have been fueling his issue and you'd have been just ripped off.

Cheers Man!

Some good Sopranos episodes read just like this story, sounds like a nice haul.

I dont play cards or gamble so I dont know what weltching is but am guessing its like being an "indian giver" ?

Four grand is a pretty cheap lesson. Not paying up and everybody whispering about it around town would be a sure way for his wife to find out. How quickly would that gossip spread that he lost his boat and wouldn't pay up? It may already be too late to quelch much of that, who knows. But, if he is trying to keep this from his wife, he's doing a really crappy job.

Letting him welch on a bet doesn't help a guy with a former gambling problem.

Re: Won it in a poker game - sort of...

I was once very, very good at playing pool. So, good that I would often take on challengers at local bars for hours at a time, without getting beat. I would start the evening by putting my quarters up on a table, wait my turn to play, take the table and then stay on it until closing time.

Aside from a game in which a women and I bet each other .... well ..... um ..... each other (long story, but we were both young and randy and we both "won"), the most I would ever bet was a beer. This is why.
