Working on those old Seahorses!

Of late I've been making a real effort to get some old Seahorses restored.

None of these were not in good shape...but they're ready for action now.

Way to go!! I got one of those TD-20's the serial # tells me it is a '47, and a fellow on here was kind enough to send me a manual ,that i got today, after seeing yours I am dying to get it into the heated shop and get at it. That is my goal, to find them and make them look and run like new, I have been lucky to get a mass quantity of old motors cheap, some are beat up, but some are nice shape, just faded. You did a good job!! And I also got some ideas from you, my TD-20 has some small dents in the tank too and the lower shroud, I never thought of body fill.. Ya learn something new every day,, thanks!

Hi Zeph!

I've been pretty busy with work, motoes, and had to sell my Feather Craft due to economic pressure of my wife being cut to part-time.

But I'm still knockin' around!

Four more motors to do:

'57 Johnson Golden Javelin
'57 Evinrude Big Twin
'49 Hiawatha 5hp
'50's Firestone 3.6hp

Then I'll have to find a new motor to work on.

Beautiful work indeed! They look showroom new! Nice job!
I know its cold in Toledo so its great to have a inside hobby like that over the winters.

I was up in Northwood last winter visiting some friends and MAN was it cold!

Yes it gets a little brisk here in Toledo.

Fortunately my boss is giving me space in former retail store to move all my boats and project motors in to work on them in the heater glory of a real building.

This will put everything on a faster track for completion.

I love working on these old things. They are wonderful examples of engineering!

I'll keep you posted as thing progress if you wish.

Yea man, I hope you stick around and keep us updated.

The old Martins like you had on your blog were made by National Pressure Cooker Company. Unlike most motors that have reed valves, these have poppet valves. I had a Martin 75 once and it ran good.

These classics were in my era of mechanics... I loved the salmon colored Johnsons. All those old engines were fun to work on and when you were done, the appreciation of an old motor still running like a swiss watch was refreshing and rewarding.

I still love to work on them and occasionally get to. There's not an outboard shop around that will take on the antiques any more. Just us "old guys" who run a backyard service.

Hey gjonz! wanna see what a nice looking Martin looks like fully restored? Go to the aomci home page. There's a nice looking Martin 60 there.

And yes, backyard mechanic, I'm like you. Oldies are all I like to work on, because of the same reason you have. I've fixed up a lot of those oldies.

I'm working on a full restoration of a '57 Evinrude Big Twin 35hp. Got it torn down today, but almost 2 out of 3 bolts broke off! I was able to drill them out and re-tap the holes. What a chore!

I've got to find one piston, as the lower one is pretty rough. I think the block can be saved.

Then strip and repaint...RUN!

I'll keep you posted as we go through the project!

Ahhhhh yes....1957 Evinrude Big Twin. Definately one of my favorite motors and probably one of the best motors built. I had a beautiful '56 model once that I picked up cheap, at Oregon Outboard Salvage. The old 18's of that year, are my other favorites.
