Hello guys,

I thought I'd share something I saw not that long ago and see if anyone else has seen similiar.

Coming back from a vacation up north we pulled over to the side of the road so I could take a leak...

in that time a little car towing a tinny loaded with stuff zoomed past.. they had the tinny loaded with all their camping great and it was piled high and covered with a tarp. they were doing around 60mph when they passed us.. I didn't think anything of it...

Got back in the car and continued on our way.. About 40 minutes later, we came across the tinny again, this time it was sideways on the road and stuff was everywhere..

Turns out that the right leaf spring gave out (probably due to all the stuff loaded in the boat) The result was that the right side of the axle suddenly had nothing holding it under the boat, so it swung around backwards till it was in line with the trailer.. and then it skidded like crazy and bounced all over the place till they stopped.. they got off very lucky.

We managed to bend it back roughly straight and in line and used a 4x2 I found and alot of rope to get it back in a towable configuration, and they towed it to a garage at 5mph.. (only a mile or two up the street) they were lucky it was only a tinny, and that the trailer was the type with the poles up each side at the back or the boat would have wandered off on its on. they were also lucky that there was no traffic that day.. coulda done alot of damage. I imagined that happening to my rig, a fiberglass boat, 5 times the weight.. and a trailer that wouldn't hold the boat on in that situation.. I'd have left a trail of fiberglass pieces 500 meters up the street. freeky stuff.

Thats why I am always nervous towing, you can't forsee some of the stuff that can happen.. say your bearing overheats, siezes and you snap you stub axle shaft off? (that happend with my father and a 24foot caravan) a garage also changed his tires once and on the trip home the back wheel on the landcruizer came off at 90kph, I was in the car at the time and it was quiet scary to have the wheel go zooming past the car and up the street.
Thank god it wasn't a front wheel that came off.

So thats my three adventures with tow vehicles and towing.. anyone else got any?

rgds

franki

I was on my way to Chincoteague, VA one day and had just passed through Salisbury, MD on US 13. I saw a state police car pulling a 16' fiberglass skiff chasing down a speeder - caught him too. I'll bet he was surprised.

I wiped out the boat and trailer by doing an unexpected 180. Everything ended up off the road and in 3 pieces (truck, trailer and boat). The trailer was mangled into a pretzle the fiberglass boat ruined all split and cracked and the truck was fine just spun around. I guess I dozed off and woke up and pulled the wheel going offroad and back on. The funniest thing happened during the procedings my buddy woke up halfway through the spin saying "This ain't normal." I learned a valuable lesson through this I don't drive especially if I am pulling a trailer if I am tired.

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

Pulling a pop-up camper form NJ to VA, going around the DC Beltway 5:30pm on a friday, and blew the right rear tire on my truck, we were doing about 65mph. It took all three lanes and about 3/4 mile to stop. At one point I looked back and the trailer was sideways on one wheel, the door to the camper was open and scraping on the ground. I

lost the supports for the pullouts, on the road, Bent both rims on the trailer so bad I had to replace them, but other than that no one got hurt, and no damage to any cars, My heart on the other hand has not been right since.

I had my six year old daughter in the back seat, She did not say a word, or scream the whole time. After I got to the side of the road, she ask "Daddy are we Okay now?". Traffic was so bad, I had to have AAA come change the tire on the truck, The cars would not even slow down as they passed me on the side of the road.

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

i had a 69gto that lost the whole front right wheel on the freeway at 'moccasin bend' in chattanooga TN one day. the side of the bank there drops off probably 4stories to the Tenn.River it jerked hard to the right when it fell to the pavement, but luckily i had both hands on the steering wheel. i got it stopped and found the tire crammed up under the fender also... apparently i had overtightened the lugs, and it took 3 hrs to get both frnt hub stubs replaced. - ahhh, the good ole days
i've had a small 'tinnie' trailer blowout, but nothing major. i did flip the same john boat off the trailer once, when trying to get to a river access point i shouldn't have. didn't hurt much but the battery and my pride. i got on a too steep embankment, hit a bump and away it went.

69 GTO, I bet you wish you still had that one. One sweet piece of machinery!

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

oh, in keeping with the post, i have a towing story, rated as my worst. i was moving, so i decided to store my glass rig up at parents house, and since it was due to rain, i bought a cover for it. it was the lightweight nylon type(not sure exactly, but not heavy canvas). it was held on with bungee cords. i had pulled this boat before, but as usual, i stopped a couple times to ck for bearing problems, and look it over, then drove on for the last @ 1.5hrs... got there to find out a cord pulled loose on the right side and the little metal "S" hook gouged a nice 1"x4" hole 1/4" deep in the side of the boat!!!
now if i tow with the top on it, i use rope and tie to the trailer.

My brother-in-law tells of a friend and family off on their holidays up north towing the 22 foot boat behind their 4x4. When they climbed the Brynderwyns out of Whangarei their vehicle, trailer, boat and all went over the side down a huge drop. We don't know why and no-one made it out.
Ross

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

fortunately, this didn't happen to me but rather to a friend of mine. He had just gotten a new (to him) boat--21 foot crestliner phantom. He was pulling it up to Lake Superior for our annual fishing weekend, when another driver pulled in front of him and stopped to make a left hand turn into a McDonalds. The good news is that he was able to stop in time, but the semi behind him didn't and it ran right into his new boat. No damage done to the boat, other than a bent skag, but the yoke on the trailer was pretty screwed up. Had the semi been going much faster it would have pushed to boat right into his truck. He was able to limp to the nearest dealer and got the trailer fixed and made it to the hotel. I met him up there the next day and we had a great trip! Not a lot of fish, but a lot of fun. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the accident. It will never cease to amaze me when I see people cut off tow vehicles of any kind or size and expect them to respond like any other car on the road.

dh

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

To make a long story short.l worked for a sailboat dealership for a few years so I had a lot of time logged in trailering and also a lot of screw ups... but the best, was when they came out with the winged keel. I had a 23 footer on a trailer that was not made for it (a common experience in the sailboat world as most buyers don't get trailers) anyway, after rigging the boat I went to back it down the ramp, salesman and proud owner on the boat, I watch the fenders on the trailer to get an idea of how deep I'm in.Anyway, the wing on the Keel hangs up on the trailer frame and the boat is in effect, connected to the trailer. meanwhile, the salesman and owner are waving me back into the water. now we have a trailer that is connected to the boat and the fenders will never disapear. well you can just imagine what the outcome was ............

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

Don't laugh, that may be the next thing in boat trailers...

floating trailers.. it actually has some merit..

if you could keep it straight.. the trailer would move around to accomodate the boat instead of the other way around, better for the boat...

just a thought,, must have been funny to see though..

do much damage?

rgds

frank
