Re: Would you change careers?

I was a Jet Fighter Mechanic in the U.S.A.F. Then I went to work and retired from GM after 30 years. I also went to College and Pastored Churches for 28 years Both Bi-Vocational and then finally Full Time. I also drove as a Courier for Grand Truck Railroad. If I had my choice I would be a Full Time Pastor any day. Though Pastoring was by far the poorest paid position it was by far the most rewarding. I loved serving people and seeing their lives changed as their walk with Jesus Christ grew and they matured in their Christian faith. To see the Children and Adults both grow and mature and their lives become enriched by their faith was the most rewarding career anyone could experience. I have since retired but I still occasionally fill in pulpits as the need arises.

As a full time Pastor with a lot of other part time hats, I gotta agree with your post. Would be hard pressed to change (but you could tempt me with a part time Professional Hunter or Fisherman's position ;) )

What a great question. I don't have too many regrets about what I do at the money in being self-employed in consulting.
However, I would have to narrow it down to a couple of things. If I was to have to generally 'work' I would probably consider being an electrician...but not general residential. Purely industrial and preferably automation, robotics higher end stuff.
Equally up there perhaps would be to have a classic car business on some level...parts, restoration, or something along that lines. I have met some great people in that hobby and there is always seems to be a need for people who raise the bar beyond the 'back yarder' approach.
I think that would be fun and cool. I don't consider targeting anything for the money....at least not right now. I've never seen that wash out to mean much in the long run.
All good :):)

Re: Would you change careers?

If you were to decide to change careers tomorrow, what would you do for a living? Work in another industry? Start your own business? Both? What would it be?

For me, I think I'd go in to business for myself as a general contractor.

I have always had an urge to start my own business. Something in a motorcycle salvage yard (sense we don't have one near by), small engine repair, or a combination of. My father and I keep talking of different business's that would possibly be good prospectives to get into. I would probably would get laughed at if I went down to get a loan to start my own business. My father has been offered a couple of opertunities (even though he is disabled), he has literally been offered 3 businesses or so (just don't know for how much), but my father didn't go for any of the deals. Right now I don't have a career lol, much less a job (do to a permanent layoff as mentioned before), this might change in a couple of weeks though (not for sure), might be going back into production . With the 12 hour shifts maybe I can pursue my dreams in starting my own business.

Re: Would you change careers?

I probably wouldn't change careers. I love working with my hands and my head. I will however be changing what I am working on. Right now I'm off with a herniated disc, awaiting surgery to correct it. When I'm back to 100% I'll be looking for a position with another dealership, but a different manufacurer. Also I was wondering what being a preacher would be like. Well cbavier or aspeck where would someone start? I always thought if I won the lottery I would go to school for comparative religion or theology. Not for a career but just for my own interest.

Re: Would you change careers?

If I was younger.... I should not have retired with 20 yrs in the Army but stayed for 30 but it was due to family obligations and it was the correct choice at the time.... I did love the job.

Once again.... if I was younger I would love to expand my Special Effects work but leading the nomadic lifestyle is not for me......

I still keep my hands into a few occupations and most of all I try to enjoy what I do.

Re: Would you change careers?

I like the money I make, and I am helping people all in the same.. My wife and I are both Nurses, Im 23 years old and make $35k a year and my wife is 24 years old and also make $35k a year.. We only work THREE 12 hour shifts a week.. We both work m-t-w and the same hours.. So we have 4 days off a week together.. ITS GREAT.. Has alot of benifits..

However, If I could change my career, I would like to be a crime scene investigator or a defense attorney..

Well inspite of the fact they both went to college for four years. I assume. They have probably $30,000 or more in student loans. Both are professionals and both have a tremendously important job. If you think not just wait until you get sick. The nurses are really the care givers and I don't think $35 K is too much to pay for good care. I sensed sarcasm in the last couple replies so I just had to inject my 2 Cents worth.

I agree $35K is peanuts for a good RN, even at entry level ......;)
It's funny how little value people put on certain jobs, teachers for instance.....

What gets me is how the lawn mower shop charges 65 dollars an hour for repairs. It?s just a lawn mower. Teachers make about 18 bucks an hour

No no, I wasn't sarcasum...ing (or whatever) them at all. I don't think 35 a year is enough for a nurse. Heck I probably make close to that and I'm a unskilled laborer. I though they should be more like 45 for first year more with experience.
