Would you vacation in Cuba?

It seems the current Administration is leaning toward relaxing the US stance re: Cuba. If it came to pass that Cuba was open to all citizens (not just Cuban-Americans), would you want to vacation there.

I for one, would be all for a vacation there.

I don't know, the whole 'mass murdering communist dictator' thing gives me pause.

From what I've heard it's quite beautiful in the resort/coastal areas. Also it's down rite cheep, if you bring green backs that is. Course if they open it up to Americans, the prices and cost of vacationing there will skyrocket.

I spent a year there between 1975 and 76. Of course it was at Gitmo :D

It is a beautiful place to see. Just don't end up in one of the largest mine fields there is. Water is crystal clear, the diving and snorkeling is great. Saw my first banana rat there, they get bigger than a raccoon.

I don't think I want to go back, still lots to see here stateside for me ........SS

Didn't Cuba have an outstanding tourist economy and reputation Pre-Castro? Just wondering.

I wouldn't be put off by it however there's alot of places I want to see in my lifetime.

I would love to visit the places where Ernest Hemingway wrote and lived.
It has a bustling tourist economy already with lots of Canadians and Europeans visiting,so the prices probably will not go up

I probably should have thought of that before I typed. Let me re phrase:

Was Cuba a popular tourist destination for Americans pre-Castro?

Re: Would you vacation in Cuba?

For the next five years I think we've got plenty of places to go in the U.S. Plus, I've tired of the hassle related to leaving/entering the country; I'd much rather fly to a beach in FL and be on the sand in 15 minutes.

When our kids are grown and gone, and *if* it gets easier to travel outside the U.S. then I might be inclined to give it a shot. I'd probably be more willing to first visit "tropical" locations that are safe (we've cut Mexico out of our near future plans), reasonably priced, have good infrastructure, and plenty of decent accomodations. From what I've read Cuba would have a real hard time keeping up with U.S. visitors that could number anywhere from 500,000 to 1M per year. Sounds like their hotels are already at 70%+ capacity during the high seasons. Granted, hotels can be built, but they don't spring up overnight.

There are plenty of other places to visit, why lust after one which runs under a not-so-nice dictator? I'm fine never seeing Cuba, there are 400 other countries to see.

Very much so. Think pre-'family frendly' Vegas with palm trees.

I was on a destroyer that moored there to keep out of the way of a hurricane that upset our exercises. I went diving one afternoon and compared the water to the Keys. However, being Gitmo, we didn't have access to the people or the countryside!
Yeah, I would give it a shot. I have traveled all of the Caribbean and would like to add that to my places I have visited....

There are pretty credible stories of 25LB largemouth bass in some of Cuba's fresh water lakes.

There are also verifiable stories of the world's finest cigars and some of it's best rum.

Same here, I've seen where he lived in Paris & Key West, but it would be cool to see his place in Cuba. I heard a story that during WWII Hemingway would patrol for U-boats off the coast of Cuba in his fishing yacht! Supposedly he once spotted one and gave chase, but it slipped away before any Navy patrol boats could get there. I think it's the same yacht that's displayed in Key West.

-and more non-running vintage American muscle cars than a Mississippi trailer park.:D

THAT, I'd go there for. Might have a hard time getting a 'Cuda through customs though. Not your typical duty free item.

Not if I had to take a plane.

The last several plane trips were a disaster. Late or canceled flights, lost luggage, arrogant screeners, yada yada. If I can't drive there, I ain't going.

If it opens up, it will part of my sales territory, same as Puerto Rico is, so I'll get paid to go and I honestly can't wait....

Also, I read that the entire island has as many hotels as Detroit...Quite a few are over 100 years old...Was first thinking of shoddy 3rd world construction with lax building codes, but they have survived 100 years and some MAJOR hurricanes, so good enough for me!

I've never been (yet) but I know a lot of people (fellow Canadians) who have vacationed there and had a great time. Nice beaches, good value, very good deals....no hassles and they seem to go back.
My wife would like to have a nice sun vacation so I think we will probably go down there for a vacation over the next year or so.:)
