Buy a rod and reel, you'll sleep better at night.

Okay I will bite.

What is Gag season about? What kind of fishing is that, that you can shoot them?

A Gag is a type of Grouper and he's talking about shooting them with a spear gun.

YEP and I smell scuba envy:) But they are so thick there's no need to dive. We will have our limit in 30 minutes with a rod and reel.

This full moon is killing me. Not good in 30ft or less.

Awwwwww, too bad... so sad.:p

I don't have scuba envy (my ears won't let me), but I do have Grouper envy.

I think you should target Vermillion Snapper instead and just leave those poor little Groupers alone.

... or maybe Trigger fish, you sound kinda like a Trigger fish kinda guy eh?

That is the fad down here. But every wanna be fisherman thinks shooting fish is easy. I do both. But the full moon is a bad thing unless you are going 50ft or more. I can out fish 99% of any wanna be with a rod and reel. But its fun to feed um steel sometimes.

Freediver, make sure you get good pictures of yourself.

003.jpgFishing was slow with the full moon. We did get 4 nice fish from 30 inches to 26 inches. Stayed inside of 12 miles all day.

Re: Wwwwwaaaaaaaaahhhhhooooooooooo

To explain. Being on this part of the coast much of our fishing is done on very small spots. We have thousands that just hold a couple of fish. Mostly shallow. 10 to 35 ft in close. The issue with that is during a full moon the fish eat all night and are not very aggressive even during normal feeding cycles. We bottom fished for a while and the usual. Tons of shorts. I trolled deep plugs and picked up all the fish that way. I trolled over spots we bottomed fish getting nothing and then picked up a 20 pound grouper. I think some times the noisy plugs aggravate them enough to attack it. The water you fish gets deep very quick so two things. You don't have to fight the full moon with out going 20 miles out two get past the 50 ft mark. But we have a lot of very shallow grouper that you can troll for.

If I go 30 miles out I use triple fish mono, cause I have spools of it and it holds up well. The smallest weight I can get away with. The worse the current the more weight. Its gotta be on the bottom. Live bait at all cost. I always look for small spots or hard bottom that most people don't recognize. You will waste your time on big ledges. They are fished to death. Some type of really clear leader. My first choice is to drift over hard bottom. Never a ledge.

If I am drifting a knocker rig. If I am gonna anchor up and fish a Carolina rig. The bait swims much more life like and less likely to get hung up. If you dive you get a much better understanding of whats down there. I do both. I go out to get food for the family. I don't catch or shoot anything I am not going to eat. So to me its which one that day makes the most sense.

I was one of those "wanna be's" until recently. Before spearfishing the only reason I would dive was to work on the bottom of a boat or score some lobster for dinner. It does take skill and there is quite alot of excitement in it. I won't be pulling any big'uns out of the water just yet. I need to get better.

Enjoy, kahuna!

PS: Wahoo is a fish in these parts.;)

Sasto compared to most of the guys I know I am REALLY a wanna be. This is from the last tournament

Geez....kahuna. Those guys look half my age. You better be a good shot and in good shape for those lunkers. I'd tail one of them and they would find me in Cuba (not that I wouldn't mind a weeks stay).

Do they look like this?

Picture1005.jpg

Yup, jigngrub.....that's a Florida Wahoo. In the Carib they would call it a Weehoo. They grow 'em big down there.

I am 52 myself. This guy's 84 and still shoots. He's pretty tough. That picture is 4-5 years old. That was his 80 birthday
I hope I am still walking at 80. We have to go a LONG way to see wahoo over here. Although I did see bait Sat. That is very early and the water is still 84.

I did see his website, kahuna. Very impressive. Maybe the time we reach his age we can be as good as he is. Anything is possible!

We have had our annual run of mullet for a couple weeks now. I havn't been offshore in almost a month now. I think I will fix that soon.

Good Luck!

Re: Wwwwwaaaaaaaaahhhhhooooooooooo

001.jpgOur fishing is just starting back up again. Summer is the worst. But there are so many grouper right now its stupid. All the fish are in the panhandle and on your side. Well other than Boca Grand but I don't think much of that. I will tell you when you cut that string on the end of your spear it changes things. Here's a picture of a gun that just went to NC. 3/8 shaft with 4 bands. 60" shaft, 68" gun. This one will reach out and touch something. My first try with an epoxy finish over teak. Believe me I paid the price to learn that.

Nice job, kahuna. I will cut the string on my next dive and give it a try. Thanks!
