First it is a 1985 Evinrude XP150 24 gal installed tank.Okay what I have done so far to wake this motor that has been sleeping for about 1 1/2 years. Motor ran ruff before I did anything. Removed tank cleaned it out and checked/replaced all lines that were in need. New plugs and plug wires, ran motor did the de-carb as described here with seafoam, still ran ruff. Checked for spark with a timing light strobe type. Good on starboard side nothing on port side I guess that would be cylenders 1-3-5. Removed flywheel to check stator in doing so I found a magnet loose only being held there by magmatisem, re-epoxy and replaced wheel still no spark port side. Back to the stator looks like it had some slight melting on the left wraping (dont what to call it) in front there are two that look different than the others, the left one.
Any suggestions I know I need to get a stator or I think I do. So help looking for advise. What to do next bite the bullet and lay down the green for stator or should I check something else.

Thanks Greg

Re: xp150 port side not firing

Cylinders on the port side are 2, 4 and 6. They are numbered top to bottom in the order that they attach to the crankshaft.

Try swapping the powerpacks and see if the problem follows the pack; if so, replace the powerpack.

Re: xp150 port side not firing

After swapping the power packs and determining what the plan is on the ignition side, have another look at the stator. The two stator coils that look different are for the ignition side of the electrical system. If (the left) one of them is "melting," it is possible that it drives that port pack. If the potting material on the stator is melting or deteriorating, I'd consider replacing the stator in the immediate future. FYI: These GT/XP 35 amp alternators put out some serious power, and they have been knows to catch on fire if there is a problem on the charging side.

Re: xp150 port side not firing

I swaped power packs and still the same. Took off all the coils and cleaned what I am assumeing is the ground (metal part where screw is) now I have everything working except for the bottom cylender guessing might be the coil for that one. Going to pick one up tomorrow. Am going to replace stator soon though dont like the sound of might catch fire. I saw on a parts web site they sell the two different looking coils they slide on and get expoy anyone know of this or how well ot works.
