Hi

I am about to make an offer on a boat powered by the above motor. I am not familiar with the engine, any thoughts?

Cheers

Re: Yamaha 130hp V4

Hi,

thanks for the reassurance Ray. I did make an offer on the boat, they guy had to sell so I took a risk as he had someone else due to view that afternoon, at the price I knew I would not get a second bite at that cherry. NO test ride yup I know, but when you are presented with the orignal owners book plus all other original doucmentation for the boat like the fishfinder manual etc. one does does get a sense of wellbeing. The boat is in great shape so it has obviously been well looked after.

The motor was bought in December 1990 which I suppose makes it a '91 model in real terms, I assume that the boat is the same vintage. The best was when I got home and opened the cover of the motor, it is brand spanking new.

Am going out on the water in about 3 hours time just to wet the hull and to check the motor, I doubt that i was foolish but it's too late know (buyer beware).

Will post pic's in the appropriate forum sometime in the next 24hours if you are keen to check in.

Cheers
Andrew

Re: Yamaha 130hp V4

One time I had a blind date who, when I met her, looked like a Victoria's Secret girl. I lost my breath, my heart pounded, other things happened. With a drop-dead-gorgeous smile she said "Hi!" and everything went to h***. She sounded like a marsh heron. It was an extreeeeeemly long evening. So, no matter how your boat LOOKS, how does the engine SOUND? If the guy's been using all the Yamaha lubricants (TC-W3, Ringfree, etc), the engine is great, and should give many years of service. If you have the engine in the water so the exhaust is muffled, listen from the middle of the block back to the plugs, and all you should hear is whirring. Clatter means excessive piston clearance, either from inferior oils or generally an improper starting procedure (too much throttle). Clatter from behind the carbs is normal reed-plate noise. If it whirs, you have a gem. If it clatters, it won't hurt to have towing insurance.

Hey Grid,

Took the puppy out this afternoon, man it WHIRS and PURRS. Battled a little to start it but I that's a lack of knowledge as to the perculiarities of the motor (how to choke it, fast idle lever etc). Once started, the first turn of the key thereafter and she was purring again.

I am really happy, the boat fits my needs perfectly and more. She also seems just as fast as my 17' bowrider with a 115 rude.

Cheers
Andrew
