I am about to trade in my rig on a new boat and motor. I am tossing up about the motor. With oil, fuel injection 2 strokes and then 4 strokes I would like an opinion on which way to go. I am old fashioned perhaps but figure the less fancy doodads, the less the problems. I have a quote for a Yamaha 40 hp XWTL 2004. That's about as basic as it gets with premix, standard 2 stroke but with elec tilt/trim and remote. Should I go for this or something else? By the way, the boat is a 15Ft ally runabout. Tell me all you know. Regards Adam1 (down under)

Re: Yamaha 2 stroke or 4?

hello
duuude down under :)
well what is the competence level of your servicing techs?
are you going to service it yourself? what is the avalibility of parts? 4 strokes work great last a long time and can be complex toremove and clean trash, water or gunk from the carbs. the 40 pre-mix 2 stroke is rock solid and can be fixed by monkeys.
there are really no special tools needed for service or carb cleanings. parts are avalible and the motors design has been around 20 years or so. so for you down under its a hard call. study your options but remember they all break. thats what keeps me in a decent income bracket.

good luck and keep posting

hahaha
when you find one lets teach the others:) :) big bucks
good luck with the new rig. keep fresh fuel and dont keep any premix longer than 6 weeks. if parts there are hard to get then buy a carb kit, fuel pump or diaphram kit, tstats and water pump kits to have on hand, keep spark plugs about and lower unit drain and vent gaskets. follow the maint schedule very closely and it should go years and years

Rodbolt...Still in love with the new boat and the Yammy 40 is a beaut. Have caught many crabs (edible non itchy) and a few nice fish. About to give it the 10 hr service and then store it for 4 or 5 months. Any further advice such as additives and fogging?. By the way, water is spelled Fosters and there is no such monkey. The only one I could find kept cutting himself, drinking my beer and eating the bait..
Steve Irwin is a long way away in Queensland and I hope he keeps his crocks up there.

Regards from Ozzz
