Well folks it is September in Maine and we may have a few more weeks of descent boating weather. That being said winterizing the motor is just around the corner. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with changing a waterpump in a 20hp electric start 4 stroke yamaha. Looking at it, it seems like the 4 bolts at the bottom are removed, linkage disconnected and the lower unit will slide off. Is this correct? Is there anything else that I should be aware of before I get involved in this? I was a machinist for 20 years and have a good understanding of mechanics and how componets work/function. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

G'Day Bugman

I am just seeing your post, and I imagine that you have solved this problem by now. If not, I was just working on a 10 Y/O Yamaha 30 Horse 2 stroke.
I had to take the lower unit off to change the impeller and wanted to impart this info. Make sure that when you undo the 4 bolts to slide the unit off that it is in neutral. This will make the shift linkage a little hard to reconnect but all the forums that I have read on doing this, including the Yamaha book kept telling me to keep motor in Neutral.

I replaced the impller, but it still is having a problem. Wont push water out ot the tell tale. So I am still working on it. The lower unit comes off easy enough and the impeller is easy to replace. Getting it back on tho is a little tricky. Hope this helped a little.
Let me know how it is or if you have any further info on replacing the wter pump

Smooth sailing to ya.
