Might sound like kind of a dumb question to some of you ol' salts, but here goes:

What is the proper way to check the oil level on a Yamaha 225 four-stroke?

Here's why I ask -- I recently serviced the twin motors on my boat, changed the oil filters and the oil. I assumed that, like any motor, you should fill most of the way, then run the motor a bit to fill the filter, etc., then shut-down and recheck oil levels and top it off. That's exactly what I did and was right at the full mark on the dip stick.

I haven't run the boat in about a month. I pulled the engine covers and checked the oil level for an upcoming trip. The dipsticks show both motors over full by a fair amount. So, perhaps you can see my concern -- should I be going by what the dipstick says after the motors are warm and the oil has been circulated throughout the motor, or by what it says when it's cold and hasn't been run in awhile and everything's drained back down into the pan?

Obviously, I don't want to run them over full and can suck the excess out if need be -- I'm just not sure whether it's a problem or not because the dipsticks read right on the money when I check them after the engines have been running.

Thoughts anyone?
