Yamaha 225 - Proper Oil Level

Might sound like kind of a dumb question to some of you ol' salts, but here goes:

What is the proper way to check the oil level on a Yamaha 225 four-stroke?

Here's why I ask -- I recently serviced the twin motors on my boat, changed the oil filters and the oil. I assumed that, like any motor, you should fill most of the way, then run the motor a bit to fill the filter, etc., then shut-down and recheck oil levels and top it off. That's exactly what I did and was right at the full mark on the dip stick.

I haven't run the boat in about a month. I pulled the engine covers and checked the oil level for an upcoming trip. The dipsticks show both motors over full by a fair amount. So, perhaps you can see my concern -- should I be going by what the dipstick says after the motors are warm and the oil has been circulated throughout the motor, or by what it says when it's cold and hasn't been run in awhile and everything's drained back down into the pan?

Obviously, I don't want to run them over full and can suck the excess out if need be -- I'm just not sure whether it's a problem or not because the dipsticks read right on the money when I check them after the engines have been running.

Thoughts anyone?

Re: Yamaha 225 - Proper Oil Level

Hi,
Follow the Owners manual how You check oil level.

I fill oil to half on the marking range on oil dip stick. I have a Yamaha F115 (2003).

You may also want to read in the forum here at iboats:

Engine FAQ's (freq. asked questions),
4Stroke "Making Oil" by Willy B. Wright

There You will find good reason to not fill oil to max on marking range on the oil level dip stick.

don't think your engine is making oil. but i think you overfilled it by mistake. i would also recommend following the manual, but know from experience the manual doesn't address the issue. what i do know is when i took delivery of my boat and engine, i had an overfill issue. so even the pros screw it up sometimes. i now check my oil when cold and after being tilted down for at least 5 minutes. i look for between the half and complete full marks.

what ya want to do is warm the motor up. tilt it at least 15* up trim them trim it down so the cavitation plate is level. then remove the stick, wipe it ,reinsert it then remove it and take a reading. shoot for half way between the add and full marks. the reason for the trim up is to allow the main webbing to shed oil.
