I have a 2005 Yamaha F80. Fuel Injection Four Stroke. I started it up after sitting for a while and a rubber burning smell came from the lower unit. I removed the lower unit. To pull the driveshaft out you have to remove a circlip which seems to retain some sort of seal. This seal was melted. I don't know why. The seal seems to bed up against a metal collar. When removing the remnants of the seal, bits of metal came away from the collar. My question is why would this seal melt and is this metal collar replaceable or part of the seal? It was run with muffs and pumped water fine.

it would be best to look up the part you are talking about so you can call it by proper name and show us what it really is with a pic

Thanks. I have looked up parts diagrams and apart from a seal that seems to but up against the collar, I can't find anything.

what are you pulling the driveshaft out of.
where is this circlip and metal collar located

maybe it is a driveshaft bushing located inside the upper housing #23 & 24
if so it should be lubed every time you put the lower unit back in.
the drive shaft should just slide thru , no binding or removal of clip necessary

Thanks. That must be it. I guess the rubber of the bush melting must be the reason I had to remove the circlip to make it possible to withdraw the driveshaft. This is the first time I have removed the lower unit on this motor and I don't know what the previous owner did. Do you know if it is possible to take this bush out and replace it?
Thanks for your help.

I would think the removal of the clip allows the bushing to be removed and replaced
