Yamaha Multifunction Tach Trim Bars Flashing?

Have a newer digital tach multifunction gauge with single 4-pin connector. Using a 2006 F50TLR 4-stroke. Trying to use older trim/oil harness that has 4 pin male & female plug on each end to connect tach & motor. Color of wires: orange, black, pink & gray.

The tach & hour meters work great. The trim display on right side of meter shows all black bars with top bar flashing. I have checked the trim sender and it is not broken & appears to be functioning correctly. If I move it by hand (with engine fully up) the trim bars do not change. I have the number 1 dip switch set to the up position (for a 2-wire trim). Is this correct for my engine? The other dip switches are set at 12 pole (down) and 4-stroke (up).

In my searches I have read that my trim sender may need to be grounded? Is this possible and if so how could I accomplish this? I have also read that I may have a short or open wire in my harness.

Can anyone help? I would be happy to trace the 4 wire harness colors to be certain the correct wires are running to the correct pins. The colors at my meter are pink (pin 1), gray (pin 2), green/white (pin 3), green/red (pin 4). The off white connector on my engine has mostly all pink wires connected to it. Can anyone give me the specific color wires (and corresponding pin #'s) for this connector?

Thank you for any & all suggestions......

Re: Yamaha Multifunction Tach Trim Bars Flashing?

I just installed the Yamaha Tach in a pontoon that was an identical situation. The tach was the newer style (6Y5-8350T-91), engine was a 2005 F90TLRD, but had the older wiring harness. I used the existing harness and just plugged in the connector to the plug on the tach.

The existing cable had the following wire colors:

Pin 1 - Blue with a white stripe
Pin 2 - White with a red stripe
Pin 3 - Green
Pin 4 - Green with a red stripe

FYI - Pin 2, White with a red stripe is the Trim input. In my case, the dealer had cut this wire to connect to the Faria tach. I just spliced it back. It this helps you trouble shoot the problem, pins 1 and 3 are jumped together in the wiring harness on the engine.

The individual wires are:

Blue - to a switch that will turn on the illumination lamp in the gauge
Black - ground
Green - Tachometer
Yellow - to ignition for 12v dc

Since your tach works, it sounds as if you have the individual wires connected correctly.

You may want to check the other end of the wiring harness (4 pin connectors) to make sure that all wires are connected at the engine and the wire colors match on both ends.

Hope this helps

Re: Yamaha Multifunction Tach Trim Bars Flashing?

Thanks for your input.

You are correct that pin 2 is the trim signal. According to schematics I have located pin 1 is not used so that might explain why pin 1 & 3 were jumpered at the engine. Was this obvious? How did you determine this? The plug I am connecting to at the engine has mostly all pink wires. Can anyone confirm this?

You are also correct that I have the individual wires (blue, black, green & yellow) connected correctly as my tach & hour meter & light are working.

I still need confirmation regarding the setting of dip switch 1 in the up or "on" position for a 2-wire trim sender for my year engine?

Also pin 4 is the oil pressure signal. Does this just give a visual when oil pressure is low?

Re: Yamaha Multifunction Tach Trim Bars Flashing?

Pins 1 and 3 jumpered together: I found this out by looking at the engine wiring diagram in the service manual. I also verified it by using an ohm meter.

All pink wires: Based on the wiring diagram for my engine, all wires are in fact pink or have a pink tracer

I have SW 1 set to "on". As I understrand, most if not all engines after 2005 have a 2 wire trim sensor. For sure, that's the case on my 2005 F90TLRD. FYI - The trim indicator on my gauge will blink if I don't have the 4 pin plug connected. In looking at the engine wiring diagram, I see that one side on the trim sensor ("wiper") goes to the 4 pin plug (pin 2) and the other end of the trim sensor goes to the ECU. Not sure if the other end goes to +12v or if it's grounded.

I would make sure that you have continuity from the pin 4 at the tach to pin 4 at the engine. Look at your cable closely to make sure that the green/red on the cable hasn't been cut or spliced. In my case, it had been cut and spliced for into the wiring harness for a Faria trim gauge.

The tach provides a warning indicator for engine temp and oil level (not oil pressure). Not sure how it does it, but it appears that the ECU provides these functions on pin 4 and/or pins 1 & 3 or some combination thereof.

Hope this helps!

Re: Yamaha Multifunction Tach Trim Bars Flashing?

Thanks allenp42! You have been very helpful.

I was able to solve the problem today by removing the black wire from the 2-pin trim sender plug and grounding it. Thank you to Rodbolt17 on another forum (yamahaoutboardparts.com/forum2) for giving me the solution. He used to post on this forum as well. He is, I believe, a master Yamaha mechanic & knows his trade.

Just hope this post helps someone else down the road.

Now, can anyone tell me how to properly adjust this trim sender? I have loosened the 2 mounting screws & tried to adjust but my sender seems very sensitive - perhaps it needs replacing? Or, maybe it is just trial & error until I find the right position.

Thank you.......
