Not so good.

I'd go with a quality exterior grade plywood, cut to size, laminate pieces together with resin to the right thickness. Much stronger than and will rot much more slowly than dimensional lumber.

Coat it with fiberglass, including resin. Marine paint afterward is optional.

What Erik said^^^^^^ Some nice BCX will work great. Plus, keep in mind you have to wait for the wood to totally dry out before fiber-glassing it in. Home depot stores most of their wood outside. If you want to reduce drying time for the ply Lowes keeps their stuff indoors :)

e-mail the manufacture and see if your app has any problems using yellow wood, some of the new treated woods use a variety of chems to treat.
yellow wood is treated with a copper product. if you want look at Boracare
you can treat your own wood with it.

If it's wood for construction federal law requires that it's treated with a nasty chemical that requires stainless nails/screws or they'll corrode quickly. You need a ventilator cuz the sawdust is toxic. Have to wash any body parts exposed to the dust real well or they'll fall off!!!?! Not sure how well sealing it in resin/glass would hold up. Yella wood is probably southern yellow pine, great for floor joists, probably not so great for boats. Just my opinion.

Pete.
Stopped by my Home Depot and took a look at the Yellow wood. Looks and feels good for what it is, but the grain is not consistant and very wavy. I think the first good wave jump the stuff will snap glassed or not. I'm back to plywood. At this point i am using a 7ply 1/2" hardwood ply from lows. It is very strong when cut to a 1 1/2" stringer (figuing that wood be the minimum) It's exterior glue and after a good Glass job I thing it will be much better than what was in the Sea Ray originally.

What Erik said...

It's not so much about the wood being chemically treated for rot. Plywood is going to be stronger than dimensional lumber for stringers..

I agree and appreciate the checkout lr on the yellawood...I have heard this quoted above 2 or three times here..My only experience with 2X4 is I patched aroiund my ski well a couple of years ago..One side I treated with resin and fiber cloth..(It fell apart)...The other side I treated with resin and wrapped it with mat...(It held up)..It was on port side..the other was on starboard side that fell apart..
