Yes, broken crankshaft. Now what? (was "Busted crankshaft?")

No, it aligns the upper and intermediate shift shaft shoes to fwd/aft, so they slide apart. If you don't, you'll bend the shafts and/or shoes.

Chris.........

Yup, That is what I meant, I was in a hurry this morning when I wrote that. Sorry for the mis- information.

update.

I pulled the drive and couldn't really feel a difference between before or after. I could still move the flywheel by hand. It feels like like its rubbing against something. I couldn't get a whole turn out of it. It jammed against something. I could go back the other way though. Weird. I stuck my phone in there and tried to get some pictures of between the flywheel and motor. Maybe you can see something. Also found what looks like a crack in the manifold. Let me know what do you think? I'm still hoping to pull the engine this weekend. Problem is my helper (brother in law who is supposed to run the tractor) may be stuck in Rankin Inlet cause of a blizzard. The wind is blowing 55 mph at and temp with windchill is in the -70 degrees f.

Thanks Doctur, I'll measure the shaft and clean out the bellow. What do i need to do about manifold? Can we live with it like that?

If the manifold is cracked then it gets replaced. I wouldn't bother right now with the bellows, have a suspicion that your going to be looking for another motor or full rebuild.

Ayuh,.... IF, it's only cracked to the outside, ya could butter it with epoxy,....
Problem is the IF,....
'cause IF it's cracked to the inside, you'll kill the motor from the water leakage,....
'n it's 'bout impossible to test,... reliably anyways,...

Lol, Thanks Bondo. That's a big IF! And if that's the only problem i would gladly replace it. But i'm not too confident that's my only problem. And i don't care really. I still can't believe the wife let me buy a boat! So i'm shopping around for a donor engine. Tomorrow when i get it out of the boat we'll know if i got an engine or an anchor. If it's the latter, does anybody got one kinking around that they would like to sell me? Or know where to look? I thought it would have been easier finding one. And i'm not paying 5K either. I'm in Winnipeg, MB. I think i found one just outside Toronto. I really hope it's what i need, waiting for the serial number but it'll be 1250$ CAD with shipping.

I'm trying. This is all i can find in my area. And WTF does "Motor needs a fuel pump and some TLC, no obvious cracks in block or manifold so i assume it shouldn't take much to get it going." mean! Lol. Assume he says, ya sure. I don't even know where to start on that one. I could have a collection of bunk motors in no time!

Ayuh,... That means ya can't start it, 'n run it to see if it's any good,...
But,...
That don't mean ya can't do a compression test, 'n see if it's got good bones, or is junk,....
Btw,... I believe you can get a brand new long block crate motor for 'bout $1500.....

Thanks Bondo. I can do a compression test if i can get it to crank. And say it passes that test, how do i know it's didn't freeze and crack? I mean, do i "assume" it's good cause it doesn't have any "obvious cracks". What would you do? And were do i look for a crate motor? Cause i'm going to start looking right now!

You could contact Piston Ring or Custom Crankshaft and see if they have any used blocks.
They rebuild a lot of these motors. Not sure if Custom is still around.

Nix marine in east selkirk has a lot of used stuff (I'm in no way vouching for them)

Also there's a fellow in Gimli that sells used stuff that you could contact. I've bought a couple of things from him.
Here's an example

Ayuh,.... A quick google search, "3.0l base marine long block engine", tells me I'm wrong,... more like $2700. or so,...

'n, No, yer right, a compression test won't tell ya 'bout a cracked block,....
That's when lookin' real closely at the block, up, 'n under the intake/ exhaust manifold is important,...
That's the wet side, 'n where they crack,...
Anywhere from 'bout a 1/4" below the head, down to the drain plug,...
There, 'n directly opposite the drain plug, on the inside oil cavity,... where ya can't see til the oil pan is off,...
