Re: You Guys Inspired Me!!!!

your boat is probably rated for 85hp...
I currently have a 1971 Johnson 60hp on my 16ft SS ...best top speed I've been able to
get is 30mph(checked with GPS)
not only is there the dangerously addictive 2ft-itous but
there is always the more is better-Horse Power...:whoo:
I dream of upgrading my outboard to 85hp...
From checking the Forum...I would get my boat up to 35-40mph with a 85hp outboard...
Downside..besides cost...use more fuel...the four cyclinder Johnson is not known as a fuel sipper..
but I don't use the boat that much to care about the fuel costs...
also more added weight to the stern of the boat...
what brand is the 70?? Johnson??? If the Johnson...I think the 70Hp is only a 3 cyclinder and
probably not as bad on fuel as a 4 cylinder...
There seems to be a rule of thumb around this Forum...at wide open throttle
running for an hour(who does that very often) for an outboard ...
take 10% of the HP for gallons of fuel used
85Hp / 8.5 Gallons/Hour...at wide open throttle
70Hp / 7 Gallons/Hour...at wot
50HP / 5 Gallons/Hour...at wot

I have not heard people complaining of having too much HP ..unless they went way over
what their boat is rated for....
If you do not already have an outboard with Hydro-electric shift...I would avoid these...
the solenoids in the lower unit are no longer available if they go bad...
I think you would be happier with the 70HP over the 50HP but don't know how your
budget is for this project...I plan on doing a cylinder pressure check on my dream 85HP
Johnson Outboard when I find it for the right price...willing to bottom feed if the outboard
has good pressure readings...
Does your 50HP run OK now without investing in it?? See how you like it....

A 3 cylinder 70-75 is the ideal motor for a 16' SC. A 3 cylinder 90HP Yamaha would be friggin' awesome. Your 50 would be adequate,

I've gotten to 36mph with my 1977 75hp Evinrude(check my sig). I tend to avg about 34mph with 2 people(and gear) aboard. I would guess that a prop-rated 85hp would get ya to 40mph.

Re: You Guys Inspired Me!!!!

Since you asked, my Jupiter has the 50hp Johnson on it. The few times I had it on the lake it ran well. I forgot to bring my GPS every time but at wot it felt like we were in the upper 20's. This was lightly loaded with 2 guys, a cooler. and a little fishing gear. It did jump up on plane quickly though. Now my fishing partner and I have a early 80's Ranger with a 70hp Johnson it pushes that boat at wot to 35-36mph and it a heavier boat but probably a little more performance oriented. I kinda reread your intro and you dont say your intended useage but if it involves kids, tubes, skis, or girls you probably should look for that 70. or like EZ said the Yamaha would be just wicked on there. Goin out fishin the 50 is fine. Choices, it all part of the fun.

Re: You Guys Inspired Me!!!!

So today was very productive. Got all the controls and electrical stripped out then pulled up the floor and cleaned it all up. The inside of the hull looks perfect, only found one little problem area where the transom brace meets the transom itself. When I pull the transom it will be an easy repair. I will get the cherry picker from my father-in-laws shop at the beginning of the week and yank the motor off and pull the transom.

when cleaning..might try using a hack saw blade to poke anything out that might be blocking
the drain channel under each of the ribs down the middle...you are not trying to cut anything with the blade!!!
just see if you find anything...also if you have a tank vacuum ...try vacuuming each of the ends of the ribs...
I was able to get a lot of Styrofoam balls out of mine...

Is the transom mushy? There have been a few re-dos here with cracked knee braces and most have had soft transom ply. Sometimes accompanied with cracked splashwells. AL angle has been used to fix them by sandwiching the cracked brace.

And what SS said about the styro balls. Those things get everywhere, but the worst is plugging the limber holes.

GA, The transom is mushy and does appear to be flexing so it is getting replaced. Thanks SS, I will make sure they are clear.

Re: You Guys Inspired Me!!!!

Well guys I have been buried in work for several weeks so project suffered a little. So Sunday I made the little trip and picked up my new trailer, it looked good and sounded good, but when I got there it was even better. It is in excellent shape. Brand new tires, new lights and wiring, original paint with light surface rust (I would much rather that then multiple layers of junk to scrape off), bearing buddies, good bunks. So I am going to clean it up and haul it to my father-in-laws shop and paint it (he is a paint and body man of 40+ years). While I have been busy my brain was still working, sort of, on the boat. I have decided to polish the bottom to the water line ridge and follow it up to the bow and paint the rest, so the trailer will match accordingly. I plan on slipping the motor off this week and flipping her so we can get started.

I'am glad you are back at it. Nice find on the trailer. I'am in the middle of my trailer rehab now and spent the weekend sanding and scraping. Not fun. I like your idea for your paint scheme and the ambition to polish the bottom. Will be following your progress.

AJ, I have been following the Jupiter project closely, looking good! I got my polishing inspiration from InMotion, I am just not AS inspired. So I guess that would be "half inspired".

cpdchap, thats exactly what I mean. I have forbid myself to look at anymore of IM's boats. I would never finish. I am a sucker for nice woodwork and his is beautiful. IM I love your boats and I hope to put out 1 like your Jupiter someday. cp if you are reading this shouldn't you be out sanding or buffing something. Just kidding, your boats gonna be cool.

Re: You Guys Inspired Me!!!!

Ok Boys, I got a question........My SS has the original tag that says "Max 85 hp". I found a pretty good deal on a 90hp, would this be pushing it or do you think they were conservative in there rating. I know this once again is opinion based and I should probably just stick with the tag, but you know how it is, we always want to push it. At least it seems like I do. Also, in "68" the motors were probably heavier:lol:, how is that for convincing myself.

Re: You Guys Inspired Me!!!!

90hp is fine....you'd only be barely over the max rating.

As long as your transom is solid, you'll have no problems whatsoever.

IMO...all manufacturers max ratings are conservative. No way they would suggest a motor that's right at the breaking point of a transom/hull.

I'd hang a 90 on there without thinking twice.
