Re: You Guys Inspired Me!!!!
your boat is probably rated for 85hp...
I currently have a 1971 Johnson 60hp on my 16ft SS ...best top speed I've been able to
get is 30mph(checked with GPS)
not only is there the dangerously addictive 2ft-itous but
there is always the more is better-Horse Power...:whoo:
I dream of upgrading my outboard to 85hp...
From checking the Forum...I would get my boat up to 35-40mph with a 85hp outboard...
Downside..besides cost...use more fuel...the four cyclinder Johnson is not known as a fuel sipper..
but I don't use the boat that much to care about the fuel costs...
also more added weight to the stern of the boat...
what brand is the 70?? Johnson??? If the Johnson...I think the 70Hp is only a 3 cyclinder and
probably not as bad on fuel as a 4 cylinder...
There seems to be a rule of thumb around this Forum...at wide open throttle
running for an hour(who does that very often) for an outboard ...
take 10% of the HP for gallons of fuel used
85Hp / 8.5 Gallons/Hour...at wide open throttle
70Hp / 7 Gallons/Hour...at wot
50HP / 5 Gallons/Hour...at wot
I have not heard people complaining of having too much HP ..unless they went way over
what their boat is rated for....
If you do not already have an outboard with Hydro-electric shift...I would avoid these...
the solenoids in the lower unit are no longer available if they go bad...
I think you would be happier with the 70HP over the 50HP but don't know how your
budget is for this project...I plan on doing a cylinder pressure check on my dream 85HP
Johnson Outboard when I find it for the right price...willing to bottom feed if the outboard
has good pressure readings...
Does your 50HP run OK now without investing in it?? See how you like it....
