Ya I think the Titanic is holding up better to salt water exposure than this baby is...

I would rather have the aluminim trailer and put new axles and hubs under it my self...
That would be a hundred times better than what you got.

I sent the dealer an email with all of the pics and a link to this thread. I am being cool, cal and collective in the wording of my email. Yes a possible disaster was avoided by this trailer breaking in my driveway and not on the freeway on the way home. I am sure that the dealer will think twice before sending a questionable trailer down the road again. I started a similar thread on the MasterCraft site forum as well with alot of the same responses as here except for this one:
I am a used car dealer. If I was a boat dealer and sold that I would
make good on it immediately. AS IS means AS IS legally but their is
such a thing as customer goodwill and word of mouth advertising.

I have seen that type of rust many many many times. Here in the northeast where we are nowhere near salt water but we are near salted roads.

I would be willing to bet money that trailer was parked on grass and never got enough sunshine to dry it out.

That type of rust is very very common to metal that has not been properly cared for and shows pure neglect.

I beleive I would be getting my boat off that thing. If it fails, it may damage the boat.

Ya Ive seen it before on a car that sat in the grass for 20 years. Not on a 3 year old trailer that rotted from the inside out.

I know all about the salt, I grew up in Pennsylvania...

I find it hard to believe that trailer is three years old, my 20 year old 16' roller is in much better shape than that and it is no spring chicken I can tell you that.

Well after reading and seeing the photos. Referring to your first post where you say that the original trailer was shot and the dealer gave you this one instead.
I am thinking that the dealer know that the trailer he gave you was shot and needed to keep the better one (the one that was originally on your boat) for himself. He needed to dump the rotten one and you were the unfortunate one that ended up with it. Your original photos make it look like an impressive trailer on the surface.
I guess we will all learn from your bad experience.
Good Luck with it and I look forward to hearing how you make out.

Ken.

I have read it. But lets say that bunk drops. Whats that hull going to look like after it smashes in to a crosmember? That is considering there is a crosmember thats stronger than the glass.

Good luck on getting a trailer out of them. I hope you get something reliable. I would have had them put on something it fits to begin with. That boat doesnt even fit it. All in all they should get you a reliable trailer for that boat. Also good luck in your endevour of fixing that boat up so you can enjoy your time on the water and look back and laugh at this situation. That is if you get help from the dealer. Good luck my friend.

I felt sick looking through your pics Alpheus. Is there such a thing as this in the USA?

http://www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au/consumer-refunds.htm

I did not read the link but from the title of the site, my guess is that the organization in your link is similar to our BBB (Better Business Bureau). We also have the Adutant Generals offices in each state. Sometimes they can get involved in matters like this. I have not had to use the assistance of either, so far...

I dont want a refund. I bought the boat not knowing if it ran or not, so I rolled the dice on that one and came up a winner. Now as for the trailer, as you can see thats a different story. Im sure this will get sorted out once I get the guy on the phone...

Yeah, it's the Department of Fair Trading and it exists here in Oz for occasions such as this trailer debacle. Being a state government body it can be slow, but boy do dealers (car and boat) listen when the D of FT get on the case. Alpheus, it'd be well worth the effort to find out if there's something similar where you are! Good luck.

I might be aorth a trip there in person with all of your pictures in hand and talk to the owner... He can't ignore your call if you are standing in front of him...

Trailers have VIN's like cars. You might want to check it's age. Usually on the tongue area somewhere.

Re: You Know The Saying "trailer is worth what you paid for the boat" **I Disagree**

I don't know if this has been said before, its a lot of reading to the end. but I keep seeing that the trailer is three years old (2006) but if its a 2006, then the trailer was probably used in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009. its even possible that as a 2006 it could have been used some in 2005. In that case that trailer could have been used for 5 seasons in salt water. And as AS ALREADY stated over and over by others. any non galvanized steel trailer will rust through in those conditions if not cared for properly.
Yes the dealer was wrong in telling you the trailer was solid, But come on, you have to take some responsibility because looking at the pictures of the trailer you should have been running away from that thing, no matter what anyone says. It is clearly not in any condition to be used, even before the tongue fell off. and as far as not being safe on the road, with the way the boat is positioned on that trailer what is to keep it from sliding right up into the back of your truck or worse. Given all of this I would just be thanking your lucky stars no one was hurt and it just broke in the driveway.

Like I said before, you paid a grand for the boat and trailer, I would be surprised if the dealer does anything. I am sure that neither came with a warranty of any kind and both were probably sold as is for that price. A decent trailer for that boat is going to cost the dealer more than the boat was sold for, by quite a bit. They will probably offer to give you a few hundred bucks for the trailer or offer to give you a refund if they get the boat and trailer back. Which I would not do. The boat and drive system are worth way more than a grand if they work. I think the folks that are howling about the dealer making it right are forgetting the fact that you paid a grand for the package, IMHO the dealer owes you nothing other than an apology for not doing a better job of inspecting the trailer.

Re: You Know The Saying "trailer is worth what you paid for the boat" **I Disagree**

After seeing the second set of pics, I don't buy that the dealer didn't know it was rusty, he was just trying to get rid of a junk trailer with a cheap boat in hopes he'd never see either again. He probably figured that the aluminum trailer would bring good money fixed, if it did indeed need fixing. Having only gotten $1000 for the boat, he figured he wasn't going to let a $1000 trailer go out the door with it.

As far as the rust, I'd never pair up a painted trailer with any boat for saltwater use, while they can survive, the situation is far from ideal. I have had painted trailers which were used in saltwater, I currently have one that's over 30 years old and it was used in salt since new. It also sat at the marina its whole life, it wasn't pretty when I got it, but it wasn't rusted through either.

I'd be pretty surprised if that dealer will make good on the trailer on a $1000 deal, a dealer that would sell such a trailer and send it down the road, or one that would pull a swap deal like that will most likely try to sell you another trailer. That may well have been the plan from the start? I'd probably start looking for a good used galvanized trailer, especially if your going to run in saltwater. Myself, I'd have probably looked it over before towing it home, and like you said, still bought the boat anyhow, but flat bedded it home after seeing all that rust. My concern would be losing the boat over a junk trailer, whether from it breaking away on the highway or falling through a rusty frame. Take a good look on CL for a good used trailer, there's always a few for sale this time of year.
